The Dark Knight Returns Again with a New Sideshow Figure
The Dark Knight Returns is heralded as one of the defining stories for Batman, with fans now able to purchase a statue recreating its iconic cover.
Sideshow Collectibles unveils a new statue based on the famous comic series Batman: The Dark Knight Returns.
Revealed in a press release, the latest Batman statue recreates the iconic cover of Batman: The Dark Knight Returns #1 (1986) by artists Frank Miller and Lynn Varley, which has been recreated and parodied numerous times by other series. Standing at 31.5″ tall, the statue features Batman leaping through the night sky as a lightning bolt strikes behind him, with the statue adding elements not seen before, like a Joker-inspired gargoyle below the caped crusader, and a light that allows you to place the Dark Knight into a silhouette as on the original comic cover. The statue is the latest reveal from the collectible company’s “12 Days of Sideshow,” with more information, such as a release and pre-order date, yet to be announced.
Since the first issue of The Dark Knight Returns released, it has been reprinted twice with the entire series collected in graphic novels and launching sequels and spinoffs, like The Dark Knight Strikes Again, The Dark Knight III: The Master Race and Dark Knight Returns: The Golden Child, with this version of Batman appearing in other DC Comics events as well. The original series follows Bruce Wayne after he left his life of crimefighting behind, but eventually puts the cowl back on once again. The title features numerous unforgettable comic book moments, such as the death of the Joker and a final showdown between Batman and Superman.
While the original comics have been adapted into a two-part animated film series, they also served as the inspiration behind the DC Extended Universe film Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Directed by Zack Snyder and starring Henry Cavill as the Man of Steel and Ben Affleck as Batman, the fight between the two heroes adopted elements from the book, such as Batman’s mechanized suit and weaponry used against Superman.
Though the live-action film is not a direct adaptation, it did gain much praise from loyal fans and served as justification for the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut movement, which allowed for the re-release of Justice League (2017) with Snyder’s original vision for the film shown four years later. Zack Snyder’s Justice League is currently available to stream on HBO Max and a new movement to #RestoreTheSnyderVerse and give the director more input in the DCEU now in full swing.
For fans of Batman, the iconic storyline and the work of Miller, who wrote the popular miniseries, sequels and other well-known works like Daredevil: The Man Without Fear, the new Sideshow statue is something you can add to your collection once it officially releases.
