The cheeky airlines that now charge Brits for hand luggage

Some UK airlines are yet to follow suit – Virgin Atlantic, British Airways, Jet2 and TUI still allow a free suitcase.

We’ve rounded up the cheeky airlines that are charging to take a suitcase on their most basic fares – and how much you can actually take for free.

Finnair

Finnair is the latest airline to scrap free luggage in the cabin, changing their most basic Economy Light tickets to Superlight tickets.

From June 1, passengers booking the most basic ticket will only be able to take a small bag measuring 40cm x 30cm x 15cm into the cabin, which must fit underneath the seat.

Wizz Air passengers can only take a 40cm x 30cm x 20cm bag for free into the cabin, weighing no more than 10kg.

To take a suitcase measuring 55cm x 40cm x 23cm, you have to buy Wizz Priority which starts from £12.

Ryanair

Ryanair is known for being one of the strictest when it comes to taking hand luggage on a flight.

Passengers can only take a smaller bag into the cabin, measuring 40cm x 20cm x 25cm.

If you need an extra bag, an extra suitcase measuring 55cm x 40cm x 20cm in the cabin starts from around £6, or you can pay for Priority Boarding which includes a suitcase.

easyJet

EasyJet passengers can only take a bag measuring 45cm x 36cm x 20cm, weighing 15kg.

An extra suitcase measuring 56cm x 45cm x 25cm starts from £5.99, or you can book UP Front, Extra Legroom seats or a FLEXI fare which includes the extra bag.

Norwegian

Norwegian only allows passengers to take an underseat bag measuring 30cm x 20cm x 38cm, and weighing no more than 10kg.

LowFare+ or Flex ticket holders get a free suitcase measuring 55cm x 40cm x 23 cm with a combined weight of 10kg, or prices start from £9

Aer Lingus

Passengers flying with Aer Lingus can only take a small bag measuring 40cm x 30cm x 20cm.

An extra suitcase starts from £25, or you can book Smart or Flex fares.

If you want to take a suitcase measuring 55cm x 40cm x 20cm into the cabin, weighing up to 10kg, then it costs an extra £24.

Or it is included with TimeFlex tickets, Space Plus and Space One seats, Premium passengers or parents with kids under two.
