The Cheadle boutique owner who is selling up after 32 years

The owner of a Cheadle boutique is selling up and retiring after spending 32 years behind the counter.

Ann Lees has run the Crissan Ladies Clothing store on Church Road in the Stockport suburb since 1990.

Now she’s retiring — but the shop’s new owners know the business all too well.

That’s because Paula Lavelle has worked in the shop for years, and together with business partner Orla Golden, hopes to keep taking the firm from strength to strength.

“When we opened, 32 years ago, all this road was little shops,” Ann says on her last day before putting her feet up.

“There was a baker, a green grocer, and a fishmonger. We also had haberdashers.

“I think I would like to say this shop has been well known as a welcoming environment for people.

“I think we are well known for really good service, and we look after people in here.

“I am beyond thrilled that it continues with the girls. It is an institution.”

Crissan — a portmanteau of Ann’s name and friend Chris — has attracted customers from as far afield as Chester, Knutsford, and Sheffield over the years.

When asked why she thought the unassuming shop draws in people from far and wide, Orla said: “There are very few independent shops around. People want the personal service we give.

“If you go to Marks and Spencer’s no one will help you.

“A lot of customers here are aged over 50-years old and they might want alterations doing. That’s really important to people.”

Crissan has been running for years

Paula agrees, and said the shop will stay in a broadly similar vein as it is now.

She told the Manchester Evening News: “We are going to keep it as it is because it works. “We will do other lines, more gifts, and weddings.”
