The Blue Hulk: Who Are Marvel’s Strangest Gamma Powerhouses?

The HUlk has been green, red, gray and every color in between, but the Blue Hulks are some of Marvel’s most powerful characters.

Over the course of the Hulk’s long career, his powers and personality have changed many times. The iconic green-skinned behemoth that loves to smash will always be his most famous incarnation, but there’s a color spectrum of Hulks with one for almost every color in the rainbow.

From Thaddeus Ross’s Red Hulk to the elusive Grey Hulk, these Hulks and shades of Bruce Banner may have their differences, but these Hulks usually have some consistency as to why they are a certain color. However, multiple characters have found themselves transformed into the Blue Hulk on one occasion or another. Now, we’re taking a closer look at each of these Gamma-irradiated characters to see what has them feeling so blue.

Captain Universe

The Captain Universe Hulk is likely the most powerful version of the Blue Hulk to ever exist, and he’s arguably the most powerful Hulk period. Wen the limitless Uni-Power bonded with Bruce Banner, the Hulk’s skin changed to a brilliant shade of blue, granting him the power of Captain Universe on top of his incredible strength.

It all began in Captain Universe: Incredible Hulk #1 by Jay Faeber and Carlos Magno. The Uni-Power’s strength had been compromised for unknown reasons. Its access to instant, limitless knowledge was stymied, and it was unable to solve the problem by itself. So it sought out a being who could compensate for its weakened state. That was where Bruce Banner came in. The Uni-Power bonded with him and repressed the Hulk transformation to guide Banner to the scientist who could help solve the mystery. But when they were attacked, the Uni-Power endowed Hulk with greater strength to fight back before leaving the scene of the battle. The power would eventually transfer over to Daredevil and multiple other heroes.

A-Bomb

The next Blue Hulk to appear was Rick Jones, the perennial Marvel sidekick and teenager who Bruce saved from being caught in a gamma blast many years ago. In 2008’s Hulk #2 by Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuinness, Rick had been captured by M.O.D.O.K. and the Leader, who proceeded to transform him into a new blue creature that closely resembled the recently deceased Abomination. He was much like the original Hulk, unable to retain much of his memory post-transformation. This, coupled with a similar short temper, made Rick incredibly dangerous.

Calling himself A-Bomb, Rick proceeded to battle the Red Hulk, managing to use his new powers to wound the Red Hulk, something that hadn’t been done before. A-Bomb’s battle against the Red Hulk would continue when helped the Avengers, the Hulk, She-Hulk and Fantastic Four prevent an earthquake the Red Hulk intended to trigger in San Francisco.

Sadly, Rick’s time as a gamma empowered being would come to an end when the Hulk, operating under the name “Doc Green” decided to remove people with gamma radiation-based powers. Though he put up a fight, A-Bomb was ultimately overpowered and injected with a cure that rendered him completely human.

The Mighty Thorr

The next hero to receive the powers of the Blue Hulk is almost as powerful as the special blend of Captain Universe and the Hulk. During the “World War Hulks” storyline, the Leader infused several heroes with gamma radiation to turn them into mindless rage soldiers. Among them was Thor, who took up a “Hulkified” version of his name: The Mighty Thorr after being transformed in Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuinness’ Hulk #21.

In this new form, Thor had all of his original powers, but also the added strength of the Hulk and all of his blinding rage. It seemed that the gamma radiation had an extra effect on the lightning and thunder Thor could call down, turning his skin Blue and electrifying it in some places. This new form, while powerful, would have burned Thor out within twenty-four hours, killing him instantly. Fortunately, Bruce Banner used a machine to siphon away the excess gamma radiation into himself as a means of saving his friends.
