The BioShock Series Officially Turns 15 Years Old Today

The BioShock series is officially 15 years old! The first game in the series was released on August 21st, 2007 and quickly became one of the most iconic video game franchises of all time.

Since the original BioShock launched all those years ago, creator Ken Levine and publisher 2K Games have gone on to create numerous sequels and remasters. In fact, the series was so popular with fans, that a film adaptation was announced earlier this year. Although originally announced back in 2008, it was confirmed earlier this year that a BioShock movie had finally entered development at Netflix. The movie is set to be produced by Take-Two and Vertigo Entertainment and will reportedly be a part of a BioShock cinematic universe.

BioShock quickly became a franchise loved by fans all over the world, with the first entry in the series receiving a 96 score on Metacritic, making it one of the highest-rated games of all time. As of May 2021, the series has reportedly sold more than 37 million copies worldwide, which also makes it one of the best-selling video game franchises of all time. A sequel, BioShock 2, was released in 2010, followed by the release of BioShock Infinite in 2013. But nine years later, will we ever see the series return with a new entry?

Well, there have been multiple rumors surrounding BioShock 4 this year. The most recent leak stated that news of a fourth entry would be arriving sometime this year, but as the year begins to draw to a close, things are looking bleak. However, BioShock 4 was part of the huge database leak from NVIDIA, which revealed a plethora of games that weren’t actually announced at the time of the leak. Multiple games in the leak have since been announced, which leads us to believe there’s actually a chance BioShock 4 is in development. Of course, this is yet to be confirmed by the creator or 2K Games, but we can dream…right?

So there’s clearly still a lot of Bioshock goodness to come, but what about right now? How can we celebrate this epic series turning 15 years old? Well, you can start by playing the games again…duh. But, before you do that, make sure to check out an exclusive interview with the series creator, Ken Levine, at the link below.
