The big travel mistake that could cost you £100 on holiday – and how to avoid it

BRITS have been warned against making a big mistake on holiday that could cost them £100.

Remembering where you put everything after unpacking in your hotel can be difficult, but losing some items could prove more costly than others.

One item holidaymakers should do their best not to lose on holiday is their passport, with the UK government warning people that they will have to fork out for an emergency replacement to get home.

In a tweet, the Foreign Office explained why it’s important to keep travel documents safe when going overseas.

They said: “Heading overseas? Make sure you keep your passport safe.

“You can apply online for an Emergency Travel Document if it’s stolen, lost or damaged.

“They cost £100 and will take at least two working days to get.”

An emergency travel document lets people travel from abroad if they need to travel urgently and cannot use their UK passport.

It is usually only valid for one single or return journey, but can travel through a maximum of five countries if airport transfers are needed, or if travelling by train through other nations.

However, anyone who has lost their passport and is still in the UK is advised to apply for a new one “urgently”.

Holidaymakers are still being advised to allow 10 weeks for new passports to be processed due to potential delays at passport offices.

The UK government says: “You should allow up to 10 weeks from when we receive your old passport, any supporting documents, or confirmation of your identity details if needed.”

Travel experts have recommended ways in which passengers can make sure they don’t lose their passports.

Esther Sturrus works as a flight attendant Dutch airline KLM and she revealed that she keeps a shoe in her safe alongside her important documents.

The trick means you won’t forget about all the other important things in your safe such as gadgets, jewellery or money.

She wrote in the video: “Worried about forgetting something from your locker?

“Put your heel/shoe in it and you won’t forget it.”

Travel show host Samantha Brown agreed, adding: “Believe me, you will check out of the hotel, you will go to the airport and you will forget your passport, your wallet, all of your credit cards, money, your laptop, but you will not forget to put on your travel shoes.”
