Pink is something of a Marmite colour, in that people tend to love it or hate it.
Surprisingly divisive, various hues have been linked to Barbie and Millennials alike, and discussions around gender and feminism have meant it’s either reviled or adored.
In the 1970s, a shade called Baker-Miller pink was apparently found to have calming effects on people, and as a result it was used to for the walls of jail cells and military lodgings.
‘Even if a person tries to be angry or aggressive in the presence of pink, he can’t,’ said Dr Alexander Schauss, the scientist behind the discovery.
Perhaps it’s a little simplistic to assume any colour can change people’s behaviour, but we’re starting to understand how our environment impacts our moods – as the recent popularity of dopamine dressing shows.
It makes sense that we feel happy in bright clothing (or brooding and cool in darker ones) and feel more confident when we’re wearing something we love – so why are we more conservative when it comes to decorating our homes?
Beige and grey dominated homeware stores over the last few years, with Instagram interiors accounts showing off 50 shades of taupe with every living room picture. As a result, we’re seeing a return to a quirkier and more personal way of decorating.
With this new wave of idiosyncratic interior design, colour and shape are key. Blending in is out, and pieces that have a story and make an impact are in.
