The Beauty: All Good Things Bids a Heartfelt Adieu to the Beloved Series

The Beauty: All Good Things bids a heartfelt farewell to the series after a two-year hiatus and ends on an emotionally resonant note.

What if there was a sexually transmitted disease that turned people younger, burnt away body fat, regrew thinning hair, and healed injuries faster? However, that price of beauty comes with the ultimate sacrifice of death by spontaneous internal combustion within 23 months — a piece of information hid by the powers that be for their own personal gain. In 2016, Jeremy Haun and co-writer Jason A. Hurley explored this exact epidemic and premise in-depth in their Image Comics series, The Beauty. The duo created a tale of action and suspense, packed with twists, conspiracies, and assassins. Now after a two-year hiatus since the last issue’s release, The Beauty returns with a one-shot finale to tie up loose ends and bid a final farewell.

The Beauty: All Good Things is a two-parter, with the first half of its story featuring the assassin duo of Ezerae and Timo who are out for revenge against the mob boss Bianchi who arranged a hit on their friends. Having invaded his heavily guarded mansion in Brazil, Ezerae and Timo break into Bianchi’s office only to find him dead, burnt from inside out. Satisfied with the outcome they go on a beach vacation oblivious to the impending ambush. The second story revolves around the detectives Vaughn and Foster from their time together on the Beauty task force. An old man with dementia is killed by his wife of many years, the extenuating circumstances of which put stress on an already on-edge Foster.

Writers Haun and Hurley built the world of The Beauty from the ground up, taking their time to cultivate its characters and their relationships. The issue bids adieu to a pair of complex characters on a path of vengeance while giving closure to another from the other end of the law. However, the conclusion to the series feels bland. But, its earnest portrayals of life through the lens of humanity and warmth have always given the comic book a different dimension, and The Beauty: All Good Things is no different.

The first part of the story is drawn by Matthew Dow Smith, an industry veteran with immense experience in the indie field who employs deep linework to create an emphatic effect. Haun contributes to the art in the second part of the story with the help of illustrator Danny Luckert. The team is currently collaborating on The Red Mother for Boom! Studios and their chemistry here is on full display via the lucid and expressive artwork in the latter half of the book. Colorist Brett Weldele deftly uses bright shades to create picturesque panels. The use of contrasting colors to fabricate light and shadow helps set the book’s mood and tone.

Vaughn and Foster talk about retirement in The Beauty: All Good Things

Rather than dwelling on the repercussions of the disease and the political atmosphere of the world, the finale of The Beauty: All Good Things evaluates the strength of human relationships in the harshest of times. Despite its shortcomings over the years, the final issue ends with genuine emotions that are well complemented by its artwork. The Beauty: All Good Things is Jeremy Haun and Jason A. Hurley’s lovechild, a heartfelt farewell to the series that has divided fans over the years but finishes on a strong note.
