The Batman: Paul Dano offers helpful advice to fans recreating Riddler costume

Paul Dano has offered a disclaimer to fans wanting to imitate his ‘homegrown’ Riddler costume, which he donned for upcoming blockbuster The Batman.

Matt Reeves’ gritty new take on the DC classic stars Robert Pattinson, as the eponymous hero, and Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman.

Paul, who plays the caped crusader’s mysterious nemesis, joked that there ‘ain’t any green spandex in this one’, referring to Jim Carrey’s iconic Riddler costume, after reading Matt Reeves’ script for the movie.

Instead, the 37-year-old Emmy nominee went down a different route, wanting to reflect his character’s ‘meticulous’ nature but also acknowledge that his vigilante might not have quite as many resources as another bat-shaped vigilante in the movie.

However, this then involved cling film, which caused some issues for the actor, which he is keen not to pass on to any fans who may make their own Riddler outfits.

Revealing the consequences of his choice of costume on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Paul said: ‘I wrapped myself in cling wrap which I thought looked scary because of the light and I thought I’m not going to shed any hairs here on the crime scene.

‘The first day of filming about an hour in and I just start to see white, and colours, and my brain is getting very tight… and it’s day one so you don’t want to be the actor who’s like “I’ve got a little headache”.

He admitted that he had tried to ‘suck it up’ but struggled without being able to sweat, as it was ‘going back inside’.

The There Will Be Blood star continued: ‘I got through day one without telling anybody, and I got home and I’m probably Googling ‘brain swelling’ in my bed.’

However, comfort was offered to Paul the following day after the team started to poke holes in the cling film for him so he could breathe more easily and ‘things got a little better’.

Addressing the audience directly he said: ‘I might as well take this opportunity to offer a disclaimer to any Halloween costumers, or cosplay fans out there: maybe skip the cling wrap.’

The actor had previously praised the DC fandom’s ‘passion’ in an exclusive interview with Metro.co.uk, sharing that it had made the experience ‘so much fun’.

He also divulged that he had seen some of the fan art on the internet and been impressed, adding: ‘I mean, some of the artwork that people send online, it’s incredible – and the fervour around it and the anticipation.

‘So now that we’re at the point we get to share this film – finally – it feels really, really special.’

Paul attended the star-studded premiere of The Batman in London last week, alongside his castmates, and is set to appear at New York’s event on Tuesday.

The Batman is released in cinemas on Friday, March 4.
