The Apprentice star Amy Anzel apologises for homophobic slur in deleted tweet
The Apprentice star Amy Anzel has issued an apology after she tweeted a homophobic word.
The beauty expert was in Manchester on Saturday afternoon when she asked her followers about what the best spots were along Canal Street.
The 48-year-old then tweeted a homophobic term, before quickly deleting the post after backlash from the LGBTQ+ community.
A few hours after the original tweet, the reality star issued an apology for the comment.
‘I just want to apologise to the people I’ve upset with a tweet I posted last night,’ she penned.
‘As soon as it was pointed out, I took it down. It was taken from a conversation – and I was repeating what my friends were saying.
‘I really meant no malice by it at all, it was meant with love.’
Anzel refers to herself as an ‘LGBTQ+ Ally’ in her Twitter handle, but has been accused of performative allyship by fans of the show.
One Twitter user said: ‘I’m sorry but it’s a no, love. Posting a few memes does not make you an “LGBT+ ally”… It all looks suspiciously like a marketing strategy to me. Were you really “mobbed by h***s” or just held to account?
Another commented: ‘Think it’s more that as you’ve established a platform it would be amazing to be a constructive ally and raise awareness for LGBT+ issues as well as having fun hun!
‘Like enjoy yourself but please remember to push your allyship positively by engaging your platform constructively.
They added: ‘Especially as it’s LGBT+ history month February so a gal with a platform like yours can defo have fun and have the support of the community, but it’s always worth reinforcing that allyship back by standing strong and raising awareness with the platform you have xx.’
While a Twitter user said: ‘This goes back to what I said to you last week. „Im just repeating what my friends say“ isn’t an acceptable excuse when you’ve already been called out and pushed your behaviour even further.
‘Hopefully this time you’ll take something away from it [sic].’
The Apprentice airs Thursdays at 9pm on BBC One.
