The 2022 I’ds of March!
The concept is this – for the Ides of March, I tell you things that I’d have done in certain comics!!
But don’t worry, I’m not talking about simple 20/20 hindsight things like pick a famous bad storyline and just say, “I wouldn’t have done that” or “You know that cool character? I wouldn’t have killed him/her.”
No, I mean more like tweaks and nudges, stuff like that. Not major changes. Also, no repeating past I’ds of mine, as that’s too easy!
You can check out past years’ I’ds to see what I’m talking about, or just read on! I’ve also asked my fellow CBR writers (and a bit of an odd guest star) if they’d like to share some of their I’ds, so I’ll mix them in there, too!
I’D MAKE CATWOMAN CARMINE FALCONE’S DAUGHTER IN THE COMICS
This is a total cheat, of course, since I’ve literally done a column about this in the past in my “Winds of Change” column (for retcons that I wish would happen), but I dunno, I think that it is still worth noting.
I’D MAKE SCARLET WITCH AND MAGNETO FATHER AND DAUGHTER AGAIN
Also a repeat, but when I went to go link to the Winds of Change column, I noticed that this was another one and I honestly can’t believe that it still hasn’t been resolved. The Trial of Magneto seemed to be the 100% clear place to do the reveal, right? And yet it wasn’t done! How is this still not fixed? Just fix it already!
I’D BRING BACK THE FUTURE AVENGERS FROM CHILDREN’S CRUSADE
This one is from CBR’s Nicholas Howe. I’d bring the hinted at Avengers and Dark Avengers teams back that were teased in the mid-2000s YA lines like The Runaways and Young Avengers. They teased interesting line-ups that weren’t the same 6-7 members constantly. Also, most of those characters have aged into adulthood, so now is the perfect time to bring them into the Avengers, not just the offshoot teams like Avengers Idea Mechanics and A-Force.
I’D HAVE RICK AND MORTY DO A COMIC BOOK CROSSOVER
It really seems like the Rick and Morty comic books would be the easiest way to do all sorts of comic book crossovers with the characters, right? It reminds me of how the Mask character had all sorts of comic book crossovers over the years. Imagine Marshal Law versus Rick and Morty!!
I’D HAVE ANOTHER THING SERIES BY WALTER MOSELY AND TOM REILLY
I totally get that Mosely might now really WANT to commit to doing an ongoing Thing series, but man, we really could use a series of Thing miniseries by him and the great Tom Reilly. It’d be fun if he just chose different points in Fantastic Four history and go from there.
I’D MAKE MAESTRO THE NEW THANOS
This one is from CBR’s Brenton Stewart, whose I’d from last year came true, so maybe this one will, too! I’d make the Maestro the next Thanos. He’s always been a fantastic villain and his latest solos detailing his origins flesh that out more. But everybody loves a good Hulk fight — why not give them a truly evil Hulk fight? We NEED a World War Maestro.
I’D HAVE KELLY THOMPSON WRITE LEGION OF SUPERHEROES
My friend Jude actually mentioned this to me the other week and it’s really a brilliant idea. Kelly Thompson was AMAZING writing Jem and the Holograms with its diverse and expansive cast and that is just the sort of thing that would be perfect for the Legion of Super-Heroes! What a great fit for a writer and a series that would be!
I’D BRING BACK THE WEBSPINNERS FORMAT, BUT WITH BIGGER NAMES
Now don’t get me wrong, I understand that it is VERY hard to keep up the level of quality that I’m talking about here, but Legends of the Dark Knight held up to that level for, like, five years, so I don’t think it is too crazy to suggest that perhaps we could revisit the Webspinners concept (you know, Legends of the Dark Knight for Spider-Man) with bigger names. Like Legends, it could be a chance for people who might have just A Spider-Man story in them to tell that story. Now, it might be fair to say that in the modern comic book industry, it just makes more sense to make them all individual miniseries, then fine, but how about a sort of Webspinners umbrella line with these series of a miniseries? The JJ Abrams/Henry Abrams/Sara Pichelli series could have been under this line of comics.
I’D MAKE A NEW SUPER SONS SERIES BY TOMASI AND GLEASON
This one is from CBR’s Danny McMahon. I’d give Peter Tomasi and Patrick Gleason full creative control of an ongoing SuperSons series.
I’D DO A MARVEL VERSION OF KNIGHTS OF STEEL
I liked this idea so much that I had it be a Line it a Drawn theme a while back. Knights of Steel is such a fun concept that it would really work well ifit was done at Marvel, as well. It’s a very “elastic” concept, as it were. Marvel medieval characters would totally rock (that Avengers arc by Busiek and Perez with the medieval Avengers was fun).
I’D BRING BACK SOME OF BLUE BEETLE’S SUPPORTING CAST
As I detailed in a post a while back, Len Wein introduced a whole interesting supporting cast for Ted Kord in Chicago in his Blue Beetle series in the 1980s and when the series ended, we never saw any of them again. Ted Kord hasn’t had a lot of love interests, so it’s a shame that we can’t revisit Melody Case from that series, as she was a strong love interest.
I’D TELL “ALIAS” ERA JESSICA JONES STORIES AGAIN
This one is courtesy of my wife. I’d use the Multiverse (or just some “Five years ago” magic) to continue the “Alias” era of Brian Michael Bendis’ Jessica Jones. The series had a fine conclusion, but there was so much more to be done with that version of Jessica Jones who isn’t a wife to a superhero and a mother to a toddler.
I’D GIVE MARK RUSSELL AN ONGOING SUPERMAN COMIC
I could have sworn that I used this I’d in the past, but I couldn’t find it, so, well, here it is! Mark Russell has totally proven that he would excel when given the chance to do a major superhero ongoing series and his Future State: Imperious Lex miniseries was excellent and I’d just love to see him do an ongoing Superman series.
I’D MAKE GWEN STACY SPIDER-WOMAN AGAIN
I get it, I truly get it. I know why she was named Ghost-Spider and I understand that “Spider-Gwen” can’t be her actual superhero name, but with Miles and Peter both running around named Spider-Man, why can’t we have two Spider-Women out there, as well? What’s the big deal? There are also multiple Hawkeyes, Captain Americas. I bet there’s even another Fancy Dan out there somewhere!
Okay, those are MY (and other CBR writers’…oh, and my wife’s) “I’ds” of March, so now you folks share YOUR I’ds in the comments section! Or on Twitter. Or on Facebook. Wherever you feel like, really.
