WASHINGTON — Tesla Inc. is recalling 35 of its electric Semi trucks in the U.S. for an issue with the parking brake that may allow the vehicle to roll away.
The recall covers 2023 Tesla Semi trucks, the first of which was delivered in December to PepisCo’s Frito-Lay plant in Modesto, Calif.
Tesla Semi trucks built on or after March 14 are made with a replacement part and therefore are unaffected.
The electronic parking brake valve module on the affected vehicles might not move into the park position when the parking brake is activated, according to a recall report submitted March 24 to NHTSA.
“If the parking brakes are not engaged when the driver expects them to be and the driver releases the service brakes, the vehicle may unintentionally move, increasing the risk of crash,” the report states.
Tesla told NHTSA it has not identified any warranty claims, crashes, injuries or deaths related to the issue.
Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems in Avon, Ohio, makes the Intellipark parking brake valve module, according to the report.
To fix the problem, Tesla Semi service teams will replace the parking brake valve module with a revised part.
Service teams were notified starting Monday. Owners will be notified starting May 23.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the automaker is planning to produce 50,000 electric Semis for North America in 2024.
