Ten Hag has four reasons to quit Man Utd as Glazers push temper

Behind the scenes, Erik ten Hag’s patience at Manchester United is starting to wear thin. The Dutchman is having to contend with some issues at Old Trafford, with the Glazers unwilling to sanction spending, with the 53-year-old’s mood worsening as a result. Express Sport now looks at four reasons Ten Hag would have to turn his back on the club as things continue to go from bad to worse.

Glazers reluctant to spend

Upon being named United manager last year, Ten Hag was promised backing.

The Glazers are, however, unwilling to sanction any spending until they’ve determined what to do with the club.

That means United are already playing catch-up to their rivals, with Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal all adding to their squad so far.

With no quick end in sight, it’s not unfeasible that Ten Hag will have to cope with the same resources as last season.

There’s already a sense the current squad has reached its peak – which would mean Ten Hag having to work miracles once again.

Doing that for a second season in a row would understandably frustrate the Dutchman and may even lead to him throwing in the towel.

Things could stay the same (or get worse)

Even if the Glazers do sell, there’s no guarantee things will get better.

Particularly if Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s bid ends up being chosen.

Ratcliffe is willing to let brothers Joel and Avram stay at United and while he’s promised investment, his time as Nice owner doesn’t exactly suggest he’ll be able to bring back the glory days.

Throw in the fact the 70-year-old’s offer isn’t debt free, United would likely face many of the same issues as they do now.

That would likely displease Ten Hag, with United frugal in January and tight again this summer.

United have a poor record at raising funds

Ten Hag is currently working on a budget of between £100million and £150m.

And the Dutchman knows he needs more money to play with if United are to close the gap on Manchester City.

That will depend on whether they’re able to jettison some deadwood in their squad.

United have made substantial profits on just three players since allowing David Beckham to move to Real Madrid 20 years ago, however.

And that incompetence behind the scenes would risk United falling even further behind.

United are already playing catch-up

Another reason Ten Hag could feel a temptation to go is because of the club’s rivals.

Arsenal have already moved for Kai Havertz, while they’re hopeful of signing Declan Rice as well.

Liverpool wasted no time in getting a deal for Alexis Mac Allister done and dusted.

And Chelsea have added Christopher Nkunku to their squad as they seek an improved campaign under Mauricio Pochettino.

United are already lagging behind. Dawdle further, and Ten Hag’s bad mood could yet spiral.

Who does Ten Hag want to sign?

In a dream world, Ten Hag would make four signings this summer.

He wants a new striker, with Harry Kane, Victor Osimhen and Dusan Vlahovic all players on the club’s radar.

Another midfielder is being eyed, with Mason Mount appearing to be Ten Hag’s preferred target.

United would love to land another right-back, despite having Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Diogo Dalot on their books.

And Ten Hag is open to recruiting a new goalkeeper, too, amid uncertainty over the future of David De Gea.
