Temple demolition: Karnataka CM moves Bill to save existing structures

Karnataka government on Monday tabled a Bill seeking to protect temples and other religious structures that have come up on plots owned by the government or at public places.

The Cabinet, chaired by chief minister Basavaraj Bommai on Monday morning cleared the proposed law, bowing down to an outcry from sections of BJP leaders after district authorities began razing religious structures at public places, including on footpaths, in deference to court orders.

The Mysuru district administration came under pressure and widespread criticism from elected representatives including the Congress party after officials there razed an ancient temple structure in Nanjangud taluk, citing the government orders and court judgements.

The proposed law, called Karnataka Religious Structures (Protection) Act, 2021, however, bans construction of religious structures at public places after the law is notified, while indemnifying the existing structures. The Bill also says district authorities may allow religious activity at such protected structures as per the local traditions.

The chief minister tabled the Bill in the Legislature, which said the law was aimed at maintaining communal harmony, and not cause hurt to anyone’s religious sentiments.
