Tempest Rising Multiplayer Footage Shows Promising Starcraft-Style Base Building and Combat

Those hungry for some good old-fashioned 90s-style real-time-strategy action ought to be keeping an eye on Tempest Rising. Announced last year, Tempest Rising comes from Slipgate Ironworks (Rise of the Triad, Ghostrunner, Graven) and looks to be shaping up rather well. But don’t take my word for it – today, nearly 20 minutes of new Tempest Rising 1v1 multiplayer gameplay was shared, showing off base building, combat, and more. Check the footage out for yourself, below.

It seems like one of the biggest things setting Tempest Rising apart is the titular Tempest itself, a mysterious vine you’ll need to harvest in order to build up your base and forces. You’ll actually have to pay attention to the Tempest vine’s ecology, carefully maintaining it order to maintain your advantage over your opponent. Otherwise, this looks like classic RTS action in the vein of Starcraft or Command & Conquer. In the video above, we see the Global Defense Forces take on the Tempest Dynasty (there’s also a third faction that Slipgate isn’t detailing yet) with both sides having their own unique weaponry and advantages. Overall the game’s UI and visuals look solid, and the action is intense without being quite as frantic as something like Starcraft.

Need to know more? Here’s a bit more official information about Tempest Rising

“Take on the role of Commander in the highly mobile and advanced peacekeeping corps of the Global Defense Forces or the hard-hitting and desperate Tempest Dynasty in 2 15-mission campaigns that allow the player to customize their army for each mission, as both armies seek to understand and control the mysterious but beneficial Tempest vines that grow unchecked across the war-torn planet Earth. Other dangers wait in the shadows, as the origin of the Tempest is revealed.”

Features

  • Classic RTS base building with fast and fluid hard-hitting combat.
  • 3 asymmetrical playable factions, each featuring distinct economy and play styles.
  • Each faction offers a unique roster of units.
  • 2 epic single player campaigns with between-mission cutscenes.
  • Skirmish, custom games, and ranked multiplayer matchmaking with Elo rating.

Tempest Rising is coming to PC sometime in 2023. Slipgate Ironworks to roll out more info soon.
