Tempers flare after Blue’s ‘dog shot’ fells Neale

Carlton defender Nic Newman faces a nervous wait after being penalised for a “dog shot” on Brisbane star Lachie Neale on a night to forget for the Blues.

Michael Voss’ side had hopes of claiming a major scalp at Marvel Stadium after a huge win over the Eagles last week, but fell flat as the Lions ran out 15. 10. (100) to 11. 8. (74) winners at Marvel Stadium.

The incident involving Newman and Neale took place during a furious Lions onslaught in the third quarter which effectively sealed Carlton’s fate.

Newman found himself in close quarters with the Brownlow Medal winner during a boundary throw-in, when he threw an elbow that caught Neale on the chin.

Brisbane players were left livid at the incident and could be overheard on a nearby umpire’s mic yelling “that’s a dog shot” as they remonstrated with the Carlton defender.

Neale was able to run out the remainder of the contest, a fact that may work in Newman’s favour when the AFL’s MRO assesses the incident.

Brisbane split the contest apart in the third quarter, kicking five goals to two behinds to put the result beyond doubt.

Carlton gave a better account of itself in the final quarter, kicking five goals, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the 40-point three-quarter-time deficit.

Off-season recruit Josh Dunkley was outstanding for Brisbane with 33 disposals, 13 tackles and six clearances, while Charlie Cameron and Zac Bailey kicked four goals apiece.

Carlton was led by Adam Cerra, who also had 33 disposals. The Blues’ twin towers, Charlie Curnow and Harry McKay were held to just a goal apiece.

Brisbane will head back home to host Essendon at the Gabba in round nine, while Carlton will face the Western Bulldogs.
