Telegram CEO Pavel Durov terms Premium plans a huge success – Times of India
“It has been a year since Telegram started its monetisation, but the results have already exceeded our expectations. Telegram Premium, which we introduced just 5 months ago, quickly surpassed 1 million subscribers and has become one of the most successful examples of a social media subscription plan ever launched,” the CEO said in the blog.
Privacy-friendly Public Channel-specific ads
Durov explains that “unlike other apps,” Telegram took a privacy-conscious approach to serve ads. He said the company decided that it would not use users’ personal data to serve ads and “promoted messages should only be shown in public one-to-many channels.” He said that this approach helped bring financial sustainability to Telegram.
“Thanks to successful monetisation, Telegram will be able to pay for the servers, traffic and wages necessary to keep building new features and supporting existing ones,” Durov said. He also said Telegram is working on various features that “will set the foundation for further financial growth for Telegram in 2023.”
Telegram gets new features
The CEO’s post comes as Telegram announced a slew of new features. Telegram doesn’t show their users’ phone numbers to strangers. Users have the control over who can see their number and whether others can find them by their phone number.
As an extension of this feature, new users can sign-up without a SIM card and log in using blockchain-powered anonymous numbers available on the Fragment platform offering more privacy to users.
Taking forward its auto-delete timer feature to clean up individual chats after a period of time, Telegram has announced that users can now further control their digital footprint by setting a global auto-delete timer to automatically remove messages in all new chats.
