Teen sensation does what Usain Bolt never did

A teen Jamaican sprint sensation has achieved a feat that no other man from the Caribbean island, including former superstars Usain Bolt, Yohan Blake and Asafa Powell, can lay claim to.

Bouwahjgie Nkrumie, 19, has become the first Jamaican junior to run a sub-10-second 100 metres.

The Kingston College student clocked 9.99 seconds (+0.3 wind) to win gold at the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association boys and girls championships, held at Kingston’s National Stadium.

He became just the third junior worldwide to crack the 10-second barrier, matching the heroics of Letsile Tebogo (9.91) and American Trayvon Bromell (9.97). Tebogo ran his 9.91 last year and Bromell posted his 9.97 in 2014.

Nkrumie is now also the only man in the world with a sub-10-second time beside their name this year, with China’s Zhenye Xie (10.05) and Mouhamadou Fall (10.06) the next two quickest in 2023.

Nkrumie’s previous personal best was 10.02 (+0.3 wind).

At the world under 20 championships in Cali, Colombia last year, Nkrumie claimed silver in the men’s 100 metres and 4×100-metre relay.

Nkrumie’s history-making feat in Kingston saw him snag a qualifier for August’s world championships, to be held in Budapest.

Rohan Browning, the fastest Australian man in current times, is in Brisbane for the national track-and-field championships this week.

The 25-year-old’s personal best is 10.01 (+0.8 wind), which he registered at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.
