Team GB sees gold snatched away in 4x100m men’s relay by Italy in nail-biting finish
Great Britain was able to secure the silver medal in the 4x100m Beijing 2020 Olympic final. While running a superb race, Britain lost to Italy at the very last moment in a nail-biting finish. On the final stretch, Italy and Great Britain remained neck and neck and a significant step ahead of the rest of the competitors.
Chijindu Ujah, Zharnel Hughes, Richard Kilty and Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake each ran a strong race with it becoming clear that Great Britain would enter the final stretch in a good position.
Mr Mitchell-Blake, who ran the last leg, was left unconsolable by his teammates after losing in a frustrating finish to Italy’s Filippo Tortu.
The Italians edged Britain by 0.01 with a national record time of 37.50 and Canada took bronze in 37.70.
It was Italy’s first Olympic medal in the relay since a bronze at the 1948 London Olympics.
China was able to place fourth ahead of Jamaica.
The GBR relay team spoke to the BBC after the race and praised all the support they had received from one another as well as those behind the scenes.
Mr Ujah also insisted that the days of Great Britain not taking medals home was over as he said he felt that the relay team was able to have major success at each event.
The BBC presenter also questioned Mr Mitchell-Blake on his initial disappointment after losing in less milliseconds of the race.
He said: “Apologies if I seemed ungrateful at first.
“It is just that we put a lot of work and effort into this.
“We truly believe we are the best quartet in the world and we wanted to display that when the time comes.
“This is not just four of us here, there is a wealth of people back home who contributed to our success.
