Tata Motors and M&M brace for a fight in the e-SUV market

MUMBAI: Tata Motors is rejigging its Nexon EV portfolio in a bid to hold on to its turf in India’s nascent e-passenger vehicle market. The move comes close on the heels of the arch-rival Mahindra and Mahindra announcing the prices of its maiden e-SUV offering XUV400.

The XUV400 is the first formidable challenger to Tata Motors’ three-year-old flagship EV offering. Most of the other models from rivals including MG Motors, and Kia Motors among others, are positioned above the e-Nexon.

With introductory prices starting from Rs 15. 99 to 18.99 lakh, Mahindra will commence bookings for the EC and EL variants of the XUV400 from January 26, it said on Monday. The prices will be applicable for the first 5,000 units of each variant. It plans to deliver 20,000 units within a year of launch.

As part of the so-called repositioning, Tata Motors, the e-passenger vehicle market leader, has reduced the prices of the three variants of Nexon EV Prime by up to Rs 50,000. It’s also offering an enhanced range of 453 kilometres (almost matching the 456km range claimed by the XUV400 EL) against the existing 437 km and reducing prices of its EV MAX range by up to Rs 85,000.

“With insights gathered on driving and usage patterns, the range of the Nexon EV MAX variants have been enhanced to 453 km (MIDC), from January 25, 2023, onwards. This range enhancement will be offered to current Nexon EV MAX owners through a software upgrade, at dealerships, from February 15, 2023.

Tata Motors is passing benefits accrued with smart engineering and enhanced localization to customers, it said.

“Our smart engineering and government incentives have allowed us to achieve this disruption, maintaining the same high level of quality and service our customers expect from us. With this, we are confident that more and more customers will make the switch to e-mobility,” said Vivek Srivatsa, head- marketing, sales and service strategy, Tata Passenger Electric Mobility.
