A good mascara shouldn’t cost a fortune.
This is especially true when there are so many options on the market and it’s a product you’re meant to toss after just three to six months for good hygiene (a reminder: is it time to chuck the one you used today?).
I’m a hard person to win round though, being loyal to one only that costs a little more than I’d like – until now, as Maybelline Lash Sensational Sky High Volumising and Lengthening Mascara in Cosmic Black, £11.49, is a new contender.
My lashes are long-ish but I don’t like to use a lash curler (they make me squirm), so I have a tall order: I need lifting, volume, and more length, just from one product.
I also find most mascaras smudge on me. Come 5pm I’ll look in the mirror to see I’ve been walking around with panda eyes for who-knows-how-long.
This is where Maybelline’s newest lash product ticks the boxes.
The Sky High range has been a firm favourite among beauty shoppers for years, but this new version is meant to be the blackest yet, while offering next level volume and length.
Maybelline is one of the most trusted high street brands out there when it comes to mascara, with their Colossal Curl Bounce option also being a TikTok hit (I liked it, but think this new one is superior).
So what’s better about this?
Lashes are lifted and certainly lengthened. Instantly, they’re much more visible.
The formula also does seem to stand up to the ‘dark’ black pigment claims.
I find it’s a not as strong on volume, though. Sure, it does give you some, but this mascara clumps and ‘glues’ lashes together if you’re not careful – I’d stick to only one or two coats to avoid that.
It’s also a bit of a pain to clean off, even with a balm cleanser. You’ll need to go in that bit more thoroughly to remove it all.
But the most impressive thing that’s completely sold me? I’ve been wearing this solidly for two weeks now and it never smudges.
In the heatwave on sweaty tubes, hiking for 10 miles across windy cliffs, partying till the early hours, crying with laughter… these are all things I’ve put it through in the last fortnight, and not once have I looked in the mirror worried about panda eyes.
I guess this is why it’s tough to clean off – the staying power is unmatched.
If you need a new lengthening mascara that holds up come rain or sun, you won’t be disappointed.
