Welcome to Tanyel Tries, our beauty column in which lifestyle reporter and beauty nerd Tanyel Mustafa tests out the latest products and trends to let you know whether they get our approval – or should be trashed.

Matte lipsticks usually leave you with dry lips – but not this one.

When MAC launched their new Powder Kiss Velvet Blur Slim Stick, I had low hopes. The original Powder Kiss formula, though popular, is drying to wear.

This new extension of the range takes the best of Powder Kiss and fixes the one problem I always had with it.

Though still matte, the Slim Stick has a moisturising quality. Not to oversell it, it’s definitely not a balm, but it certainly stays comfortable and hydrating on the lips.

I’ve worn this lipstick countless times now in the office and on evenings out, and not once has it left my lips chapped and bone dry.

Due to this, it’s not transfer-proof – so that’s something you have to accept with this formulation.

Personally, though, I think it’s worth it.

The other great thing about this lipstick is how buildable the pigment is.

You can swipe on one layer for a softer shade, or layer for a bold pigment – this is especially true of the brighter shades.

Snapping a few pictures and getting a review video, I tried the shade Hot Paprika and applied a few layers.

It gives the perfect late summer lip: vibrant and fun.

The result isn’t a flat matte either – as ‘velvet’ in the the name, and velvet has a natural subtle sheen to it, so does this formula.

That slight sheen makes lips look that bit healthier, even in the more ‘nude’ shades.

Also, how slick does the packaging look?

The Slim Stick is Powder Kiss’ grown up sister – and I couldn’t recommend it enough.

Verdict: Tanyel approved.
