Tanyel Tries: Bobbi Brown’s controversial foundation finally launches in the UK

Tanyel Tries: What The Foundation

You’ve probably seen this product on TikTok (Picture: Metro.co.uk)

Welcome back to Tanyel Tries, our beauty column in which lifestyle reporter and beauty nerd Tanyel Mustafa tests out the latest products and trends to let you know whether they get our approval – or should be trashed.

If you follow beauty TikTok, you’ll have seen Jones Road’s What The Foundation all over your feed a few months back.

In case you’re new to hearing this, Jones Road is Bobbi Brown’s beauty brand, and in the US she released a foundation that was pretty controversial.

Some users loved it, but the most viral videos were of people who completely and utterly hated it.

Complaints included how the formula separates, how it doesn’t layer well, and how little coverage it gives.

It’s now finally here in the UK, so we can get our own thoughts on it.

And truthfully, it’s not as divisive as TikTok would have you believe.

Firstly, the product isn’t named well in my opinion – What The Foundation is definitely not a foundation, it’s a tint.

So sheer is the coverage, that one shade works across multiple skin tones and only a whisper of pigment is left on the face.

Spots, freckles and other marks on the face will show through.

This makes it a great product for those who want subtle makeup and don’t layer up foundation – anyone else will be disappointed.

On laidback days, I enjoy this kind of coverage – or lack thereof. I use the shade Beige.

The other interesting thing about this product is the texture. Now, mine didn’t arrive separated, but I can see over time needing to quickly mix the formula up (it comes with a spatula) as it’s so oil-heavy.

It’s a unique formula that has been designed with mature skin, that can be drier, in mind.

Oily skin will likely find it too heavy, and during the summer months it feels like a no-no with excess heat and sweat.

So I wonder, if launching here just in time for the winter was tactical – when people have drier, flakier skin and are in need of a serious moisture boost, with oil providing a good barrier against strong winds.

The oil-heavy texture also means it stays tacky on the face and doesn’t set down, and how well you get on with that is down to personal preference.

One surprising thing is that products like this don’t tend to be long-lasting given they don’t set down – this however is genuinely good to wear for a full day.

Bobbi Brown didn’t make this foundation for everyone, but for those who want natural, glowy, hydrating makeup, she’s nailed it.

Apply it with fingers – it’s useless with a brush – and stick to one radiant layer, then you’re good to go.

Verdict: Tanyel approved.
