Real Housewives of Cheshire’s Tanya Bardsley has revealed she attempted suicide three times before receiving her ADHD diagnosis.

It wasn’t until the television personality turned 40 that she learned that she has the behavioural disorder, but before then she struggled to cope with her ‘anxiety and inner restlessness’.

Speaking to Esther McVey and Philip Davies on GB News about the lead-up to getting her diagnosis, Tanya, now 41, said: ‘All the doctors and GPs just threw me antidepressants, which of course is like giving flu tablets to someone who’s got a broken leg.

‘So that upset the chemicals in my brain as well as the ADHD which led to me having a breakdown.’

Tanya explained that before her diagnosis it felt like she was ‘living with 17 TVs on’ in her mind.

She then shared her heart-breaking suicide attempts, adding: ‘Luckily, I’m very, very bad at trying to take my life, thank God.

‘I’m laughing about it now but it’s not a laughing matter. I just try to see the funny side.’

Before learning that she had the condition, Tanya was left traumatised after experiencing a seizure weeks before her 40th.

According to the NHS website, people with ADHD can seem restless, may have trouble concentrating and may act on impulse.

Symptoms of ADHD tend to be noticed at an early age and may become more noticeable when a child’s circumstances change, such as when they start school.

Speaking to Metro.co.uk last October about the terrifying ordeal, she explained that she had been taking medication for the illness but hadn’t adjusted to it very well.

‘I just did not thrive on it,’ she told us. ‘I ended up having a seizure on it. But I think because I had been on anti-depressants for so many years, it was just a chemical imbalance and a lot of stress. I had four businesses, I was filming, four kids, it was just a lot.’

Casting her mind back to the fateful day, Tanya said she and her family were left terrified. ‘They all thought I’d died. It gives me the heebie-jeebies when I think about it [medication].’

Tanya, who is married to professional footballer Phil Bardsley, first shot to fame in 2015 when she made her first appearance in the ITVBe series The Real Housewives of Cheshire.

She quit the show in 2021, however, returned for the Christmas special spin-off in 2022.
