TA Pai’s alma mater continues to provide free education – Times of India
Modern Higher Elementary School of Vinobha Nagar in Kadabettu, which was founded in 1927 and later renamed as T A Pai
Modern Higher Primary School, has nearly 200 students from poor backgrounds. Modern School Education and Development Trust (MSEDT) which runs the school has been providing free transportation to children in an attempt to retain students.
G Damodar Rao, trustee of the school, told TOI that Narasinga Rao founded the school and the same was managed by K Jagannath Nayak since then. There were about 800 students studying in the school in classes from one to eight. After Nayak passed away in 1979, the school was managed by Modern School Benefit Trust for some time. When the trust found it difficult to run the school, the same was handed over to TMA Pai Foundation in 1983 and renamed as T A Pai Modern Higher Primary School. Later, MSEDT took over the management of the school in 2013, Rao said.
MSEDT managing trustee H R Shenoy and 12 trustee members have the motto that the school should continue to provide education to children of the poorest and downtrodden in the society, he said
“At present, there are 195 students studying in the school and no teacher was provided by the government. The trust has appointed seven teachers and is providing them with an honorarium. The trust provides transportation, uniform, books, bags and umbrellas to students. This is in addition to other expenditures like electricity, telephone, water, repairs and periodical maintenance of the building.
A corpus fund has been created and the interest from the same is being utilised for the school maintenance,” he said adding that the school’s alumni include individuals like Prof U R Rao, ISRO’s former chairman, and Dr K Mohandas Pai, a well-known doctor in Udupi.
