A neglected dog who was found to be missing an eye and a leg is now safe and settling into a shelter after she was discovered covered in wild matted fur. Pear is a senior pooch who was rescued from the middle of a busy road on Saturday, July 9 by Mac Mission, a Missouri-based animal shelter dedicated to saving dogs with special needs.
Rochelle Steffen, the founder of Mac’s Mission, said they were fortunate that Pearl was not run over, as the thick untamed flea-ridden fur she is covered in made her not “even look like a living dog.”
In an interview with Newsweek, Steffen said: “She was the sweetest and just sat there while we got all the terrible thick matts of her which took quite a while. Thankfully, she didn’t have maggots from the matts which many do when they get matted.”
She added: “We got her cleaned up, shaved down, and a bath to get rid of any grime and fleas. She got settled into one of our spaces and fell asleep pretty quickly.”
Mac’s Mission has posted Pearl’s story to social media, and on TikTok, they explained she was “so matted” when they found her, and it took a team of three people to get rid of all the thick fur. In the video posted online, Pearl was very calm while being groomed.

A shaved-down Pearl was cuddled and then carried to a bed covered in blankets while being offered some food. The video stated that Pearl was “settling into her new spot” to eat and rest “after such a long time fighting for her life.”
On Instagram, the shelter posted pictures of Pearl and said is “like a new dog after her spar session.”
They added: “Your donations allow us to do this and help us save dogs like this very neglected girl. Pear has a new life ahead of her thanks to you all!”
Pearl’s story has quickly touched many users on social media, who have praised the shelter for the work they have taken to help Pearl as lots of comments were stunned at her grooming transformation.
One user said: “Poor little thing. I bet she feels so much better after her grooming and bath.”
Another person said: “I seriously don’t understand people. The neglect I see as a groomer, it’s so hard to not be upset. She came out looking great, she’s precious.”
A third user wrote of Pearl’s original appearance: “I wouldn’t have known that was a dog! Wow! Thank you for everything you do.”
Someone else wrote: “What a difference a day makes. Deepest thanks to everyone who came together to help this pup. She’s a cutie.”
Mac’s Mission “specialized in special” and is focused on helping homeless dog who need medical care and would die without the “life-saving care” the shelter is able to provide.
On its website, the shelter said: “Our ‘all-in’ mission is for animals who have suffered at the hands of abuse, gravely injured, or were simply born with a genetic defect…our hope is to give these animals the chance they need to heal and thrive.”
