‘Superstar’ Giga Kick wins $15 million Everest

Giga Kick has over-run a fading Nature Strip to take out The Everest at Royal Randwick.

Nature Strip took the lead as the pack entered the straight, but faded and was also passed by Private Eye and Mazu to finish fourth.

Giga Kick’s jockey Craig Williams timed his run perfectly to win by a head.

“Extraordinary, stunning,” Bruce MacAvaney said in commentary for Seven as they crossed the finish line.

“You knew he (Nature Strip) was in trouble and it was going to take something special (to win).”

Trainer Clayton Douglas said he was fully confident Giga Kick could do the job, despite the fact it was in just its fifth start.

“He’s a superstar – he had doubters he was three-year-old and probably wasn’t good enough, but I had a lot of faith in him,” Douglas told Emma Freedman after the race for Seven.

“He’s just such a professional. You can see today, 53kg, ridden like that, he’s electric. It’s a bit of a whirlwind.

“He wasn’t in the race to make the numbers up and I had a lot of faith in him. He’s a star.

“Watch out, the new kid’s on the block.”

Douglas said he believes Giga Kick is on its way to stardom.

“This horse just does things that people haven’t seen. I noted that on Tuesday and probably people thought I was being a bit cocky and all that.

“But Craig Williams had a lot of faith in this horse. He’s a star.”

Giga Kick paid $19.50 for the win. The Everest has a total prize pool of $15 million, making it the richest turf race in the world.
