Supermarket reward schemes and loyalty cards explained
From stretching out budgets by planning cost efficient lunches or reducing food waste to choosing the best gym membership by price, putting some thought into where and how you spend your money could mean you’re getting the best possible value.
And this will include choosing places which reward you for your custom, like restaurant reward schemes at places including Nando’s or cashback sites. Or, supermarket loyalty cards.
You’re more likely to use these more frequently, so how can you make sure you’re shopping somewhere that gives you more bang for your buck?
Let’s look at all the different rewards cards and initiatives.
Asda
It took Asda a bit longer than some of their competitors to launch a points scheme, but Asda Rewards launched in summer 2022.
The scheme runs entirely through a smartphone app and allows customers to collect ‘Asda Pounds’ by buying certain products or completing missions. Your Asda pounds can then be spent at stores.
To get more out of your rewards card, look for Asda’s constantly changing Star Products – which earn you more points – and various missions which update frequently through the app.
Asda Rewards also launched something new for Christmas 2022. Their Christmas Savings Card meant that each time you shopped you could have added a few pounds into a ‘savings’ account set aside for Christmas.
Asda Rewards cardholders got £1 when they saved £30, £3 after saving £80 and so on, up to a maximum of £15 on £280 savings.
It’s unclear if they’ll run this again in 2023, but it was a nifty way of putting some money aside for the festive period.
You can sign up to the Asda rewards scheme for free online.

It costs £1 to join the Co-Op membership. You can register online.
Iceland
What’s special about Iceland’s rewards scheme is that you get rewarded before you shop – so you don’t have to wait for a monthly round-up or tally.
The Iceland Bonus Card is a savings card and when you top-up £20 Iceland gives you £1 extra, if you top up £40, you get £2 extra and so on, which overall equates to 5 percent of a reward.
You can sign up for free online or in store.
Lidl
Lidl offer the Lidl Plus card, and they offer different ways of rewarding their shoppers.
Through the Lidl Plus app, shoppers will unlock exclusive discounts and offers as the first way to save.
Customers will also receive four weekly coupons for different products.
And then shoppers will get personalised rewards based on their activity. For example, for every £100 spent each month will get you a £2 off coupon, while spending £250 a month gets you a 10 % off coupon.
As a final bit of fun, each time you shop and scan the Lidl Plus app, you’ll get a digital scratch card offering the chance to win up to £20 off your next shop.
