Superman’s Son Battles One of His Dad’s Greatest Foes in Early Dark Crisis Art
Slade Wilson/Deathstroke lays siege to Titans Tower in Dark Crisis #2, and he enlists a heavy hitter to take on the Son of Kal-El, Jon Kent.
Superman Jon Kent is about to face one of his father’s greatest enemies in DC Comics’ upcoming Dark Crisis event.
On Twitter, writer Joshua Williamson unveiled new artwork for the event showcasing a fight between Jon and Cyborg Superman, who is working with Deathstroke. Henry “Hank” Henshaw first appeared in Adventures of Superman #465, though he would debut as the Cyborg Superman during the “Reign of the Supermen” storyline. This storyline featured the resurrection of Superman Clark Kent, but it does not appear that Clark will be around to help his son during the upcoming battle.
Dark Crisis is set to focus on the legacy heroes of the DC Universe and how they deal with a crisis-level threat without their mentors in the Justice League. Though Jon has already been filling his father’s boots in Superman: Son of Kal-El while his dad deals with Action Comics‘ “Warworld Saga,” Justice League #75 will kill off the super team, and Clark Kent/Kal-El is a likely candidate for its casualties. Dark Crisis will pick up after the events of “The Death of the Justice League,” and it will not be just Jon who needs to deal with old foes.
As mentioned before, Deathstroke also appears in the new artwork. Williamson previously released a splash page from the same issue showing Nightwing/Dick Grayson trading blows with the self-appointed “King of the Super-Villains” outside Titans Tower, which appears to be the same locale as the Jon Kent/Cyborg Superman match-up. As for the villainous team-up, Slade Wilson previously took Cyborg Superman offline with the help of Hiro Okamura/Toyman in Deathstroke Inc. #2 and left him floating adrift in Space, so it is unclear what will allow for his return in the event.
After Justice League #75 comes out in April 2022, Dark Crisis isn’t set to launch until June 7. The gap between the two will be bridged by Free Comic Book Day 2022: Dark Crisis – Special Edition #0 on May 7 and Justice League: Road to Dark Crisis #1 on May 31. Before Williamson’s event debuts though, the writer has penned numerous titles since DC’s “Infinite Frontier” era launched, including Infinite Frontier, Robin, Deathstroke Inc., Justice League Incarnate and Batman. As of writing, Batman, Robin and Deathstroke Inc. are involved in the “Shadow War” crossover helmed by the writer, but how any of Williamson’s work will tie into Dark Crisis remains to be seen.
Dark Crisis #2 is written by Williamson with art by Daniel Sampere and colors by Alejandro Sánchez. The issue goes on sale July 5 from DC Comics.
