Superman’s Henry Cavill ‘confirmed for Man of Steel 2’

Over the past few years, Superman fans have been calling for Warner Bros bosses to grant Henry Cavill another movie in the DC Comics universe. And now it seems like Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has done the impossible. A new report from the Marvelvision podcast has “confirmed” Cavill’s return for a highly-anticipated sequel.

Marvelvision host and industry insider, Devin Faraci, claimed that DC is going ahead with a Man of Steel sequel. In the past, the title of this rumoured sequel has been “Man of Tomorrow”.

He added that the reason a Man of Steel sequel is at all possible is all because of Johnson. The star of the upcoming antihero movie, Black Adam, has been very vocal in his desire for his character to take on Superman. Who can forget him continually telling fans that the “hierarchy of power in the DC Universe is about to change”?

Well, the insider said Johnson has done nothing but fight for Cavill’s return to the series in a post-credit stinger in Black Adam. And – in particular – Johnson has been apparently fighting for the British star to get a new solo movie.

Faraci said: “[Johnson] went hard, full-court press on Warner Bros and made them go to Henry Cavill with a new deal saying they were gonna develop a new Superman movie. And it was all because The Rock insisted.”

Cavill’s return would be a boon for the DCEU, which has been left to stagnate over the past five years.

Cavill made his debut as Superman / Clark Kent in the 2013 movie, Man of Steel, by Zack Snyder. He then reprised his role twice in the follow-up movies, 2016’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Justice League in 2017.

Since then, however, DC has been painfully quiet about Cavill’s return. Meanwhile, other members of the Justice League (and the greater DC Comics universe) have enjoyed solo outings. Wonder Woman has received two movies, while Aquaman’s second entry is due to hit cinemas next year. Batman was rebooted with Robert Pattinson in the cowl, and even Birds of Prey had its own romp.

What’s more, despite being bogged down by Ezra Miller’s alleged illegal activities, The Flash is still due to hit cinemas next year, as well. But no word has been said about Cavill and his comeback.

Cavill also spoke about how he used a lot more “emotion” than was asked of him during the film’s shooting. “There’s an opportunity for growth after that,” he went on. “To explore the psyche of Superman as a deep, seemingly invulnerable god-like being but with real feeling on the inside.”

Likewise, Johnson has been extremely outspoken about wanting to see Cavill back in the cape. He recently said: “Every time I see him, we have some tequila and I say: ‘This guy is Superman.'”

A number of rumours have surfaced over the past few months about the future of the Superman character.

Fans know that The Flash will introduce Sasha Calle as Supergirl for the first time, but instead of playing the traditional role of Kara Zor-El, she will be replacing Superman’s position in the Flashpoint story. In this version of the hero’s origin, she will reportedly play a captive version of the Kryptonian kidnapped by the US Government.

What’s more, a new Superman project has reportedly been penned behind the scenes by Ta-Nehisi Coates.

Further rumours suggested that Creed star Michael B Jordan could be the best fit to play a new, reinvented version of the hero.

When asked about becoming the first Black on-screen Superman, he responded: “I’m flattered that people have me in that conversation. It’s definitely a compliment, but I’m just watching on this one.”

Man of Steel is available to rent on Amazon Prime Video now.

Black Adam hits cinemas on October 21, 2022.
