Superman: Legacy Has Entered Pre-Production
James Gunn has announced that pre-production is now officially underway on Superman: Legacy, the movie that will kick off the DCU’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters in July 2025.
Gunn shared a photo of the Superman: Legacy script cover page on Twitter, confirming in his tweet that the movie had entered early pre-production and the team are moving forward with “costumes, production design, and more” to get ready before cameras start rolling.
I’m honored to be a part of the legacy. And what better day than #SupermanAnniversary Day to dive fully into early pre-production on #SupermanLegacy? Costumes, production design, and more now up and running. pic.twitter.com/TJYpCRmdsf

Despite the exciting update, Gunn tempered expectations in his replies by asserting that casting announcements for Superman: Legacy are still a way off. He tweeted in late March that he had not yet had a “single talk with a single actor” as he was busy “prepping material for auditions.”
Gunn also confirmed he has finished writing the full script for Superman: Legacy, which will see Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. The DCU’s flagship film won’t have the “same vibe” as the MCU’s Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, Gunn has said.
Superman: Legacy is set to hit theaters on July 11, 2025. It’ll be the first title officially released under what Gunn and fellow DC Studios co-head Peter Safran are calling the DCU’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, followed by Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part II on October 3, 2025.
Other movies to follow Superman: Legacy include The Authority, The Brave and the Bold, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and Swamp Thing.
