Supergirl’s Trans Hero Dreamer Needs Her Own Comic – Here’s Why

With the end of the CW show, Supergirl’s trans hero Dreamer has proven popular enough that she should live on in her own solo comic book series.

Superheroes were created to right the wrongs in the world. As much as they are an escape for readers, they also confront the injustices of everyday life and give us better endings than we’re used to, and they also show us how we can make things better too. It’s becoming increasingly apparent that, for many minority groups, the world is becoming a more dangerous place. This is especially true for trans people right now, with lawmakers in countries like the US and the UK that supposedly support LGBTQ+ rights trying to strip away the rights of trans people. Now more than ever it seems like comics need a trans superhero and DC already has one waiting in the wings.

The CW’s Supergirl series introduced Nia Nal, the ancestor of the Legion of Superheroes’ Nura Nal, as one of its main cast of season 4 in 2018. Since then, the precognitive superhero Dreamer was a major part of the show right up until it ended. A big part of why this character was so important was because she was the first transgender superhero on television.

Throughout her time on the show, Dreamer proved to be a great superhero, and her journey to discovering her dream-based powers was one of the most interesting and compelling not just in the Arrowverse but in superhero TV in general. During her time in the series, she also confronted transphobia and highlighted the injustices faced by this section of the LGBTQ+ community on a daily basis. Dreamer wasn’t just a hero to look up to like Supergirl, she was a visible member of the trans community and that’s part of why she needs her own comic series now.

Nia is more than capable of leading her own series. She proved during her time on Supergirl that she could hold her own stories, entire episodes even, and she’s already proved this in comics too. She made her comic book debut in the DC Pride anthology story “Date Night” written by Supergirl‘s Dreamer herself, Nicole Maines, alongside Rachael Stott, Enrica Eren Angiolini, and Steve Wands. This story followed what had been established in the CW show; her partnership with Kara Zor-El and her relationship with Brainiac-5. However, it also showed a Nia who was fully in touch with her powers, effortlessly taking on the League of Shadows all by herself. It felt like a taste of what could be if Dreamer were to get her own ongoing comic book series.

The character also has strong ties to established DC history. Her descendent, Nura, is part of the 31st Century Legion of Superheroes, a group that has come back into the spotlight once again in the new Justice League vs. The Legion of Superheroes event from Brian Michael Bendis and Scott Godlewski. As part of such a large team, Nura never really got the chance to explore the depths of her powers. With a solo Nia book, that can be done, and in the present-day DC Universe where she can interact with the rest of DC’s heroes.

Both DC and Marvel have done a lot in recent years to increase the representation of LGBTQ+ characters in their comics. Whilst there have been many characters introduced that are a part of the lesbian, gay and bisexual communities, the trans community has had very little, and absolutely none when it comes to main characters. The simple act of giving Dreamer her own series, even just a limited series, would put that right and add a new dynamic character to the DCU. With a wholly unique set of powers, it would be something wonderful to explore for both fans and creators alike. DC has been adding a number of new heroes to its ranks recently, so why not Dreamer?
