Suns star’s ‘extraordinary’ ritual baffles legends

Footage from the weekend has outed Gold Coast Suns star Matt Rowell’s “odd” pre-game ritual where he eats grass, leaving a host of legends baffled.

Fox Footy cameras caught Rowell in the act ahead of the Suns’ clash against the Demons at the weekend when the former No.1 pick squatted down, grabbed a bit of grass and began to munch on it as he walked off.

Speaking on Nine’s Footy Classified, The Age’s Caroline Wilson revealed that it was something Rowell has done each time he has taken the field in the AFL.

”He does this at every single game, at every single ground across Australia,” she said.

“So we think he’s probably eaten grass at about 18 venues now. I’m not joking, that’s his pre-game routine – he eats grass. It’s an extraordinary thing.”

Wilson added that the Suns were “a bit disappointed” vision of Rowell was played during the broadcast, something Port Adelaide great Kane Cornes was confused by.

“I feel like there’s the potential to pile on and call it weird,” he told Footy Classified.

“But for them to think that footage isn’t going to come out, if he does it every game then that’s a bit odd.”

Essendon great Matthew Lloyd revealed that he’d had a number of pre-game rituals during his 270-game career including eating the same pre-game meal and not touching the banner until he was made captain.

However, he too, was left scratching his head at Rowell’s antics.
