Blur bassist Alex James wreaked havoc in the Sunday Brunch kitchen after slicing off a ‘big chunk’ of his finger, with some viewers begging show bosses to take him off air.
The musician, who has swapped concerts for cheesemaking, appeared on the morning show earlier today and joined hosts Simon Rimmer and Tim Lovejoy.
Alex was in the middle of cooking some fritters when he announced to Simon: ‘I’ve cut my finger.’
The 59-year-old presenter replied: ‘Uh oh, yes you have.’
A concerned Tim then rushed onto the set with a bandage, while Alex, who organises festival The Big Feastival, soldiered on with his recipe.
Later on, Alex revealed that he ‘took a big chunk out of my finger’, with the producers left with no other option than to take him off set twice so he could get a plaster.
The wound must have been pretty nasty as, at one point, Simon swerved around to the other side of Alex to avoid the ‘little bit of blood’ on his chopping board.
Audience members took to Twitter to share their shock over the incident, with one user calling the scenes ‘total car crash TV’.
One viewer said: ‘Alex James is insisting on putting his cut hand covered in blood over all the food he’s preparing, and Simon Rimmer running round subtly trying to stop him. Total car crash TV. And now Rimmer actually eating the fried whatever-it-was James just had his hands on #sundaybrunch.’
Another quipped: ‘Alex James provided his own ketchup.’
One joked in similar fashion: ‘Alex James does finger food in his cooking spot on today’s show…’
Another said: ‘Alex James cutting his finger causing absolute havoc on #sundaybrunch has actually lived the show up.’
Another joined in: ‘Christ…. don’t think Alex James will be asked back on #SundayBrunch again…. “Let me swap places with ya”.’
However, some fans had Alex’s back (or should that be finger?) and praised him for staying composed while his finger was spurting out blood.
