Summer holiday chaos: Spain may be added to ‘amber-plus’ list affecting MILLIONS of Brits

The UK Government has created a new travel list called the ‘amber-plus’, which France has been added to. Now, travellers returning from France must self-isolate for 10 even days, even if they have been fully vaccinated.

Tourists wanting to travel to France were forced to change their plans at the last minute.

More travel chaos could ensue if Spain and Greece are added to the ‘amber-plus’ list.

The Labour Party has estimated that almost six million Britons would face last-minute quarantine.

Jim McMahon, the shadow transport secretary, said: “Not only have they [the Government] failed to protect our borders, allowing Covid cases to rocket, they also refuse to be straight with the public and give them the information they need to book travel with confidence, with clear information on the direction of travel of infections in each country.

“Families who have booked holidays in good faith now risk losing out – a 10-day quarantine is simply not an option for many people who are already struggling financially thanks to the pandemic.”

However, France’s new stricter measures could be removed at the start of August during the next travel review.

This would be dependent on whether the cases of the Beta variant in the country fell.

Environment Secretary George Eustice told LBC: “As those rates come down, obviously the evidence will change and it can be reviewed; we will want to be putting countries like France back onto the amber list in the normal way.”

Meanwhile, Spain has been struggling with a rise in cases too, with the Beta variant making up 14.5 percent of infections in the past month.

New research has shown that the AstraZeneca vaccines are 83 percent effective against the Beta variant, and 88 percent effective against the Delta Covid strain.

It is not yet clear if Spain or Greece will be added to the ‘amber-plus’ list, but the Government has warned of the uncertainties surrounding foreign travel.

A spokesperson for the Department for Transport said: “The travel list allocations have not changed for Spain or Greece.

“We are closely monitoring the data and will take swift action on travel list allocations and international travel requirements should the data show that countries’ risk to England has changed.”

The creation of the ‘amber-plus’ list comes at the same time as Covid cases have rapidly increased in the Canary Islands.

The Canary government hopes to put some areas of Tenerife under a tighter 1am until 6am curfew, but this must first be accepted by the Spanish Supreme Court.
