Sublime Comic Preview Teases the Beloved Band’s Origin (Exclusive)
Sublime drummer Bud Gaugh comments on Z2 Comics’ anthology graphic novel chronicling the band’s history with an exclusive preview.
One of the biggest, most enduring bands from the 1990s was the Long Beach-based reggae rock trio Sublime, with the band’s history chronicled in the original graphic novel from Z2 Comics.
CBR has an exclusive preview of Sublime: $5 at the Door by writer Ryan Cady and artist Julianne Griepp, with a cover illustrated by the band’s album artists Opie Ortiz and DJ Product. The graphic novel features an anthology of short stories, from the band’s early days playing at backyard parties and handselling cassette tapes of their music out of their car, to producing three acclaimed studio albums that blended musical styles that continues to endure decades later.
“Eric got me into underground comics when we were younger, so what a better way to memorialize some of our more funny and off-color stories like the dog crap/shit show than in a comic book, right?!! It was so much fun going over all these stories, I can’t wait for people to see what it’s all about,” the band’s drummer Bud Gaugh told CBR in a written statement. “We’ve done a couple books but this one is by far the best read ever! $5 at the Door mixes the real backstory of a couple neighborhood friends growing up and how this Epic band was started, along with some of the uniquely interesting situations we’ve encountered on our journey.”
Z2 has steadily published graphic novels and special edition vinyl pressings from a whole line of fan-favorite musical artists, from Dio to Jason Derulo, with their music and history reimagined in the comic book format by all-star rosters of comic book creators.
Sublime: $5 at the Door is written by Ryan Cady and illustrated by Audrey Mok, Alex Diotto, Hayden Sherman, Logan Faerber, Bill Masuku, Robert Ahmad and Julianne Griepp. The graphic novel is available to order online through Z2 Comics.
