There were emotional scenes as Uruguay were eliminated from the World Cup at the group stage on Friday, with Luis Suarez in tears and other players hounding the referee all the way down the tunnel after the match.

Uruguay beat Ghana 2-0, which looked like it was going to be enough to get them into the last 16 until a dramatic twist elsewhere in Qatar.

South Korea were drawing with Portugal, but a late goal from Hwang Hee-Chan gave them a 2-1 win and put them ahead of Uruguay in Group H on goals scored.

News came through to the Uruguayan camp as their game continued, so they knew that one more goal would be enough to send them through, but they couldn’t find it.

Suarez had already been substituted and could do nothing but watch on from the bench, covering his face with his shirt and in tears as he watched his country fall out of the competition.

His teammates were fuming with referee Daniel Siebert after the final whistle, with Edinson Cavani and Jose Gimenez both shown yellow cards for getting in the faces of the officials.

However, it wasn’t enough to deter the furious Uruguayans who followed officials down the tunnel making their feelings clear.

They were incensed with a late penalty claim being turned down by the referee after Alidu Seidu appeared to fell Cavani in the box.

BBC pundit Pet Nevin said of the scenes at the end of the match: ‘This is totally unacceptable, screaming in the assistant referee’s ear. They’ve been ushered off now the officials because of the fury of the Uruguayans.

‘They should be just as angry with themselves because they never made the best of their opportunities near the end of that game.’

The dramatic scenes on Friday saw Portugal finish top, with South Korea second, marginally ahead of Uruguay and Ghana propping up Group H.
