Students get into the holiday spirit with a jumper day – Christabelle Danso, Greenshaw High School
The tragic arrival of the Corona virus has caused the last couple of years to be filled with isolation, fear and despair. That’s why events such as Greenshaw’s Save The Children : Wear A Christmas Jumper day are essential to society if it truly wishes to return to ‘normal’. Set up by a group of students, this events proves that there are still hopeful people who are dedicated to assisting others in their times of desperate need.
Arianna, the group co-ordinator, revealed that the wintery weather, along with the intention of getting students of the Christmas mood spurred them to organise this event. Her passion for tending to the less fortunate was also a huge factor in deciding to support this charity. “During Christmas, some children don’t get to really enjoy themselves”, she stated, “I think it’s only fair that they also get a sense of enjoyment”.
This sentiment seemed to be shared with multiple students across all year groups, who came in sporting a variety of festive jumpers and eagerly donating their pounds. The headteacher, Mr House, voiced his opinion on such charitable events, recounting how it is inherently good to give to charity as it is another way of repaying the community. He also declared that these days should remain optional so people don’t feel pressured into partaking. Even students who didn’t get involved saw the value in this. Hadi, a year 12 student who didn’t wear a jumper but still willingly donated £2, simply said that he “wanted to help the community”.
Other students seemed to be motivated by different means. “It’s fun”, another year 12 shrugged, “plus it’s charity”. Either way, it seems that this day is the beginning to reconstructing the feelings of joy and unity that had been lost during the pandemic. The chosen charity, Save The Children, will use this money to invest in the education, health and general wellbeing of children in foreign countries.
