‘Struggling’ mum shares tool which helped her save over £1,000 a year on energy

As the cost of living crisis continues, a single mother has explained to Express.co.uk how she managed to keep up the rising bills despite being in debt.

Emma Andrews has been able to cut her gas and electric bills in half over the year.

Using Nous.co, the 42-year-old was able to see what areas she could cut back which helped her save over £1,000 over the year.

Ms Andrews said: “Previously the cost of living crisis meant the £1,600 debt I had was huge and I was paying £200 a month for gas and electric for a family of two in a two-bedroom house and now the debt is gone. It took me 18months to pay it off.

“I am actually now in credit with my utilities provider. I was sacrificing feeding myself whilst ensuring my child ate as I was really struggling and having to prioritise bills before anything else.

“Now I pay £100 a month for my utilities as for cutting back the nous app helped me see how much money I had left after all of my bills had been paid and gave me the opportunity to set goals for myself and my family and help budget for the month.

“This helped me to see what I could cut back on and where I spent my money and helped me prioritise my spending and curb bad habits such as unnecessary take aways when I had a fridge and freezer full of food and helped me be more mindful to help reduce waste.”

With energy prices still sky high, and the wait still on to see new cheap fixed deals available to customers, household money-saving tool nous.co has come up with a simple hack that could save families more than £100 on what they pay for energy now.

It works because Nous gives any commissions earned from switching back to customers in the form of monthly rewards.

Rob from Shrewsbury also managed to save £863 a year on his household bills with Nous by switching his energy, broadband and mobile contracts.

He said: “On my broadband I’d actually finished my contract, so I was on a rolling tariff and it had gone up to £71. Nous managed to bring that down to a package that I selected.

“With my phone contract, it actually transpired that I’d been paying for my watch for 12 months more than I needed to. That’s saved me about £25 a month.

“It’s ridiculous how much I saved! I was always a little bit blasé about it all. The fact of the matter is, just on those two examples, £65 to £70 a month has been saved. That is a crazy amount.”
