Strictly’s Shirley Ballas offered ‘take it or leave it’ deal over show return
Joining the reality dancing series as head judge back in 2017, the championship ballroom dancer has appeared on the past six seasons, most recently alongside Anton Du Beke, Craig Revel Horwood and Motsi Mabuse.
However last month Shirley, 62, revealed the toll trolling had taken when judging the 20th season, which saw wildlife presenter and cameraman Hamza Yassin and Jowita Przystal crowned champions.
She revealed that negative remarks received from people watching along at home had left her at an ‘all-time low’ after she was sent thousands of ‘truly awful’ messages about decisions she made when sending contestants home.
After she hinted that her return is ‘in the process,’ reports claim that Shirley has been offered a raise and stressed that the team care deeply about her ‘wellbeing.’
A source shared: ‘[The team] are also very conscious that we are in the midst of a cost of living crisis and a licence fee freeze and it’s against this whole backdrop that the deal has been put to Shirley.’
‘Nobody wants her to walk, but Strictly has proved throughout its history that no one is bigger than the show,’ they added to The Sun.
When speaking about the impact of the trolling, Shirley had previously said she had been ‘struggling’ last year.
‘It wasn’t just a little bit, it was a lot – the majority of it was in silence,’ she told The Mirror.
‘I felt the abuse snowballed out of control and impacted me in such a negative way.
‘I’m a pretty stoic person, and I tend to hold everything in.’
But she did say that the BBC had been ‘brilliant’ at checking in on her and offering her counselling and support.
When asked whether she would consider quitting Strictly, Shirley said: ‘It was a difficult series, I’ll leave it at that,’ before remarking: ‘Will I go back to Strictly? I always take one step at a time.’
