Strevens: Road trips are different challenges for Dagenham & Redbridge

Strevens saw his side held to a 1-1 draw by Oldham Athletic at Victoria Road in his first game in charge on Saturday and they head down to Devon to take on Torquay United this weekend.

A long trip north to take on Gateshead follows in midweek and Strevens wants his squad to build on their promising start to his reign.

“The signs of the togetherness and team spirit I want to see that we’ve got to build on together,” he told the club website, when asked what he wanted to see in the coming fixtures.

“We showed little glimpses where we played little passes and got down the side of them.

“We’re going to go into two different away games now, away to Torquay and away to Gateshead are going to be different types of challenges.

“I just wanted to get off to that good start with three points being at home. It would’ve been great to win today, if not we’ve got to try and get as quick as possible we can next week hopefully.”

Although Strevens welcomed a full week on the training ground to continue working with his players, he admitted it was going to be a bit different to normal.

“This week is going to be a bit different as a few boys go off on international duty,” he added.

“Westy goes, Mussa goes and Phippsy, which they all deserve for how well they’re doing for us, getting their call-ups.

“Early part of the week we’ll probably just have to look after the group and then just try and keep building things in to get positive results.”

Whether or not first-choice goalkeeper Elliot Justham is fit enough to play remains to be seen, but Strevens praised Josh Strizovic following his debut appearance last weekend.

“He did great. He organised well, his kicking was good. He had no chance with the goal,” added Strevens.

“He narrowed the angle well when he had [Joe] Nuttall coming through after that, which would’ve been a blow if they’d scored again.

“He settled in really well. The biggest thing is the boys know him and he’s been out playing, been patient waiting for his chance, as has ‘Birdy’.

“Clearly it was a blow losing Elliot Justham because he’s one of the best goalies in the league. Everyone would be disappointed with that but it’s given someone an opportunity and every player, doesn’t matter whatever level, everyone needs an opportunity somehow and some way you get it and he deserved it.

“Goalkeeper coach said he was ready to go, had done well out on loan, played in big games already, and I thought he did really well.”

Strevens was also pleased by the performance of Jay Bird, who put Daggers ahead in the first half against Oldham and led the line well alongside Inih Effiong.

“I thought he did great, he was terrific. His workrate and endeavour was really good,” said Strevens.

“Trying to work now with him and Inih to try and make more of a partnership because at times they were a little bit split apart from each other but that’s going to take a little bit of work and time.

“But he deserved his goal for the way he worked from the start of the game, he pinned in well, got down the sides a couple of times, held the ball up for the team.

“I’ve seen signs this week, there was certainly no worry about putting him in. He’s ready to play and I’m really pleased for him that he got the goal and man of the match performance.”
