Steven Gerrard backs Jordan Henderson message as Liverpool skipper confirms exit

Jordan Henderson’s new boss Steven Gerrard left two love heart emojis on the ex-Liverpool captain’s emotional Anfield farewell message after the pair were finally reunited at Al Ettifaq. The Saudi Arabian side have now completed the £12million acquisition of the England international midfielder, who has already trained alongside his new team-mates.

Video footage surfaced online on Wednesday afternoon of Henderson in action with Al Ettifaq on the grass in Croatia after completing his shock transfer to the Middle East.

While the clip – posted before official announcements from either club – agitated some Liverpool supporters, they did finally receive clarity on the deal a few hours later when Henderson took to Instagram to deliver a heartfelt goodbye message.

The video displayed clips of Henderson’s Reds journey while he narrated his Liverpool career and shared his gratitude for everything he experienced during his 12-year spell on Merseyside.

The post was captioned: “It’s hard to put these last 12 years into words and it’s even harder to say goodbye. I will always be a Red. Until the day I die.

“Thank you for everything. You’ll never walk alone. Jordan.”

Somewhat fittingly, Gerrard was one of the first senior figures to comment as he issued his support for his new signing.

The pair played together at Anfield during the early parts of Henderson’s Liverpool career before Gerrard passed on the armband in 2015 following his move to LA Galaxy.

Henderson departs Anfield as a Liverpool legend with a reputation as one of the club’s most successful captains.

He lifted the Champions League, Premier League, Super Cup, Club World Cup, FA Cup, League Cup, Community Shield during his time as skipper and was a focal point in Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool juggernaut following the German’s appointment in October 2015.

The central midfielder was also part of the Liverpool squad that won the League Cup in 2012 under Sir Kenny Dalglish.

A host of Henderson’s former team-mates also shared their support following his departure, as Virgil van Dijk wrote: “Captain, leader, legend!”

Andy Robertson added: “Love you brother,” while Cody Gakpo posted: “Thankyou captain.”

England team-mate Declan Rice also posted: “Legend.”

Henderson is believed to have held talks with England boss Gareth Southgate before sealing his move to Al Ettifaq.

It’s understood he has received assurances he will still be considered for international duty moving forward, something that is music to the ears of Henderson as he wants to continue playing for the Three Lions.

The 33-year-old has made a whopping 492 appearances for the Reds, scoring 33 goals.

He has also made 431 appearances in the Premier League which includes his time with Sunderland prior to his transfer to Anfield in 2011.
