State pension age Britons set to receive up to £300 boost this winter – are you eligible?
The state pension can provide important support to Britons, but other financial help is often welcome. This is made available to a large number of people through a process known as a Winter Fuel Payment. The Winter Fuel Payment scheme is designed to assist older people with their heating bills as the nights draw in and temperatures drop.
Those who were born on or before September 26, 1955 could get anywhere between £100 and £300 to assist with their needs.
However, many will wish to check whether they could benefit from this scheme, and if so, when they can expect the payment.
To be eligible, aside from the age requirement, individuals must have lived in the UK for at least one day during what is known as the qualifying week.
This year, the qualifying week was set out as September 20 to September 26, 2021.

The deadline to do so for this cycle of the Winter Fuel Payment scheme is March 31, 2022.
How much a person actually receives will be dependent on their circumstances, however, any money is tax-free and doesn’t affect other benefits.
Those born on or before September 26, 1941 will receive higher amounts than their younger counterparts.
However, the specific sum often depends on whether a person lives with others who qualify, or lives in a care home.
All individuals should receive their Winter Fuel Payment by January 14, 2022.
However, if it has not been received by this time, people should contact the Winter Fuel Payment centre.
Those who need to make a claim for a Winter Fuel Payment for the first time can do so by phone or post.
They will need to know:
- National Insurance number
- Bank or building society details
- BIC and IBAN numbers if living in an EEA country or Switzerland
- The date they were married or entered into a civil partnership (if appropriate)
