Starstruck star Emma Sidi opens up on filming sex scene with real-life boyfriend
The BBC Three show, which premiered last year, stars co-writer Rose Matafeo as Jessie, who inadvertently brushes with fame when she goes home with Tom Kapoor (Nikesh Patel), discovering to her shock that he’s a huge movie star.
Having become the biggest comedy on BBC iPlayer in 2021, Starstruck returns for a second outing this week, following Jessie as she decides to stay in the UK to pursue a relationship with Tom, rather than move back to New Zealand.
Emma, who is Rose’s flatmate in real life, reprises her role as Jessie’s best friend Kate, opening up at a recent press event attended by Metro.co.uk about what viewers can expect from her character in the upcoming episodes.
The actor and comedian shared that the new season will explore Kate’s love life with Ian, who’s played by her actual boyfriend, Stath Lets Flats star Al Roberts.
Explaining that it was ‘really fun’ for them both to delve deeper into their characters’ relationship, Emma added: ‘We have a little sex scene, which was a really interesting moment when it’s your own partner and you’re like, this is fine, this isn’t weird, and then on the day I was like, I am terrified.’
She explained how the intimacy coordinator they had on set helped them massively, as while they’re obviously comfortable with one another, filming a sex scene together was a unique challenge.
‘We did even have an intimacy coordinator. I remember thinking hang on, we know what we’re doing, but actually it was such a saving grace because we don’t actually have sitcom sex usually,’ she said, emphasising that it makes ‘such a difference, even with your own boyfriend’.
Emma also noted how they used a bouncy ball to film the scene, which she described as ‘fantastic’.
While the second season of Starstruck will see several familiar faces return, including Minnie Driver as Tom’s agent Cath, it will also introduce new cast members, including The History Boys star Russell Tovey.
During the press event, Rose – who co-writes Starstruck with Alice Snedden – recalled how they were looking for a ‘particular person to embody the character of a difficult director’ who works with Tom, explaining that just like Cath, he would be a ‘caricature of Hollywood roles’.
‘That one was an amalgamation, I think, of every annoying interview with a male director I’ve ever read. Not anyone in particular. None of them but all of them,’ she said.
‘Russell completely keyed on it and nailed it,’ Rose added, praising the actor for bringing ‘his A game’.
Starstruck season 2 premieres on February 7 at 10pm on BBC Three.
