Star Wars: Crimson Reign writer Charles Soule clarifies the Knights of Ren’s relationship with Qi’ra and Crimson Dawn.
Star Wars: Crimson Reign writer Charles Soule says the Knights of Ren are not proper members of the Crimson Dawn criminal organization in the Marvel Comics limited series.
In the fifth and final issue of Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters — Crimson Reign‘s predecessor — it was revealed that Ren (founder of the Knights of Ren) had allied himself with Crimson Dawn. However, in an exclusive interview with CBR, Soule clarified that Ren and his clan are not actually part of the organization.
“To clarify — Ren and the Knights of Ren are not part of Crimson Dawn. They are working with Qi’ra and her people, to achieve a shared goal. Ren’s not much of a joiner,” Soule said. “It feels spectacular to get to expand what we know about him and the Knights, especially with his appearance on TV recently as part of the Terrifying Tales holiday special on Disney+ — as a Lego, no less! Will Sliney put a lot into him when we built him, and to see him making his way into larger storytelling is incredibly fun.”
Soule plans to pen a trilogy of Star Wars miniseries set between the events of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Said trilogy began with the five-part War of the Bounty Hunters event series, and now continues with the five-part Crimson Reign title. In War of the Bounty Hunters, Soule reintroduced the character of Qi’ra — previously played in the film Solo: A Star Wars Story by Emilia Clarke — who now takes on a front-and-center role in Crimson Reign.
In Solo, Qi’ra — the one-time paramour of Han Solo — was a member of the criminal syndicate known as Crimson Dawn, having never been able to escape the life of crime she and Han were forced to live on their homeworld of Corellia. By the end of the film, Qi’ra had to part ways with Han, at which point it was revealed that the leader of Crimson Dawn was none other than (Darth) Maul. However, given the fact that Maul canonically died in the animated series Star Wars Rebels — after the events of Solo and before those of the Original Trilogy — Qi’ra herself is the leader of Crimson Dawn by the time Crimson Reign takes place.
Of course, Crimson Reign will also feature Ren and the Knights of Ren as major players. Created by Soule and the aforementioned Sliney, Ren originally debuted in the Marvel Comics limited series Star Wars: The Rise of Kylo Ren. The comic delved into the origins of Ben Solo/Kylo Ren — the main antagonist of the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy — showing how the former Jedi came to lead the group that the original Ren had founded.
