Star Wars Sets Up How the Jedi Lost a Padawan Long Before Anakin or Dooku
In Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures: The Monster at Temple Peak #1, Ty Yorrick’s flashbacks may reveal the root of her fears.
WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures: The Monster at Temple Peak #1, on sale now.
In Star Wars: The High Republic, Ty Yorrick has shown that not all Force users choose to follow the Jedi Path. A seasoned monster hunter, Ty currently seems more concerned with tracking down monsters and gaining profit for her efforts, though her desire to help people still does shine through sometimes. In Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures: The Monster at Temple Peak #1, Ty takes on a mission to help a rancher colony on Loreth deal with a Gretalax, a mysterious creature that only has been told about in cave paintings. During the mission, Ty also has flashbacks to her time as a Padawan with the Jedi. These flashbacks show that the miniseries may finally shed more light on why Ty left the Jedi Order.
While Ty Yorrick was not a part of the first waves of the Star Wars: The High Republic subseries, she is a major player in the second wave. In both Cavan Scott’s Star Wars: The High Republic: The Rising Storm and Daniel José Older’s Star Wars: The High Republic: Race to Crashpoint Tower, Ty Yorrick reluctantly aids the Jedi in combating the Nihil threat against the Republic Fair and Valo. In both of these novels, her ambivalence towards the Jedi Order is apparent. Even so, Ty’s encounters with the Jedi clearly affect her as she takes center stage in Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures: The Monster at Temple Peak #1 by Cavan Scott, Rachael Stott, Vita Efremova, Nicola Righi, Johanna Nattalie, Riley Farmer and Heather Antos.
The Nihil attack on Valo may be the reason behind Ty’s preoccupation with her memories of her time as a Padawan in Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures: The Monster at Temple Peak #1. Specifically, Ty’s flashbacks involve her friendship with fellow Padawan Klias Teradine. The flashbacks begin with Ty and Klias sparring, and Klias goads Ty for being too “meek and timid,” a description that does not seem to fit her adult self. Her full name is revealed to be Tylera, and her Jedi Master Cibaba seems to not approve of Klias, urging Ty to “follow [her] own path… rather than pretending to be someone [she’s] not.” The final part of this line is juxtaposed over a panel of Ty in the present discussing which mission to take next with her droid, KL-03. Whether this juxtaposition implies that Ty is currently pretending to be someone she is not is yet to be seen.
Later, Ty flashes back to Klias convincing her to help him look into the Yallow Sanctum on Mount Bikja, even though Ty is wary because the “Yallow fellowship were Dark siders.” The flashback ends with the two preparing to climb that mountain as Ty in the present begins to climb a mountain to seek out the Gretalax. While Scott alluded to Ty’s departure from the Order being connected to Klias in an interview with Kristin Baver from starwars.com, this issue confirms their connection. The focus on Klias in the flashbacks shows that whatever they found on Mount Bikja traumatized Ty and convinced her to leave the Jedi Order.
In Cavan Scott’s audio drama Star Wars: Dooku: Jedi Lost, Dooku recalls his own adventures with Sifo-Dyas when they were both Padawans. Of particular relevance, Sifo-Dyas finds Klias Teradine’s holojournal. Dooku reflects that Klias had a legendary reputation for being “problematic, testing the boundaries of his masters, and repeatedly bringing the name of the Order into disrepute. The two Padawans use the holojournal to find the Jedi Academy’s Bogan Collection. Within the Bogan collection, Dooku has dark visions and injures Sifo-Dyas trying to fight them. While the whole encounter turns out to be a test, the experience still leaves a mark on Dooku as he continues his training.
Unlike her past self, the present Ty Yorrick seems unwilling to make her own choices. In Star Wars: The High Republic: The Rising Storm, Ty explains her normal process for choosing missions by consulting Verazeen stones, stones with suns on one side and moons on the other. Ty reflects that “Every big decision was a 50-50 chance. Take the job. Don’t take the job. Nice and simple. […] it was never her fault, only the stones.” Thus, her consultation of the stones is rooted in her own fear of being responsible for the effects of her choices.
The origin of this fear might be tied to Klias. When Ty connects with Elzar to fight the Nihil, Elzar gets a small glimpse of her past, including her memories. In a vision, Elzar “saw them train, heard them laugh, and then felt shadows fall. A decision made. A life lost.” In Ty’s case, the emphasis might be on that decision made that resulted in her losing someone she cared about. While Elzar tries to show Ty that she is not alone, she ultimately refuses his offer to let her rejoin the Order. Her return to using the Verazeen stones in Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures: The Monster at Temple Peak #1 shows that this fear of responsibility still guides her methods, and the memories that Elzar stirred up still affect her.
Thus, while the true reason for Ty’s departure and subsequent journey into monster-slaying has not yet been fully revealed, the flashbacks in Star Wars: The High Republic: The Monster at Temple Peak #1 show that the comic miniseries may finally reveal Ty’s motivations. Ty’s usage of the Verazeen stones hints that her departure coincides with a decision that she made that she deeply regrets. Whether Ty regains confidence in her own decision-making and makes peace with her past remains to be seen as the Star Wars: The High Republic subseries continues.
