Star Wars’ Most Mysterious Bounty Hunter Finally Has a Backstory

Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters – Boushh #1 finally gave a backstory to the bounty hunter that Leia impersonated in Return of the Jedi.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers from Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters – Boushh #1, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

Star Wars is full of underdeveloped characters that have a ton of potential, and it’s always exciting when one of them gets his or her due. One of those characters is the bounty hunter Boushh. Thus far, the only thing known about him was that he was a bounty hunter who had his armor stolen. Now, in Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters – Boushh #1 (by Alyssa Wong, David Baldeon, Israel Silva and VD’s Ariana Maher), the mysterious bounty hunter finally gets a story of his own.

Boushh’s first appearance kind of came in Return of the Jedi. It was in his armor, and with his thermal detonator, that Princess Leah infiltrated Jabba’s Palace while attempting to rescue Han Solo. The only other canon appearance of Boushh was in Star Wars: Forces of Destiny Season 2, Episode 6 “Bounty Hunted” which showed how Leah acquired the famous armor and detonator. Basically, the only attention Boushh has ever been given has been in regard to losing his armor, so nothing was really known about him – until now.

The issue opened by showing Boushh and his crew of five Ubese doing a job for a Black Sun boss on Ord Mantell. Someone had stolen the crime lord’s Silvercore Speeder, and Boushh was tasked with getting it back. Afterwards, the bounty hunter treated his crew to a meal, and they reminisced about being banished from their home world of Uba IV.

Being banished was something that they all had in common, but it wasn’t something they were proud of. Through a voice-over type commentary, Boushh explained his group’s history: “Being exiled from Uba IV cost us everything. All traces of our lives were erased from Ubese public record. Our families won’t even speak our names.” From that, it’s clear that Boushh and his crew were a bunch of wandering souls that found each other because of shared trauma. Their interactions also showed that they were a tight-knit group that actually cared for each other, especially since they were all cut off from their families and lives.

Boushh’s commentary continued: “As exiles, we bear this armor as a mark of shame. It doesn’t matter why we did what we did. Only that we committed a crime and were convicted. Adjusting to life off of Uba IV was a culture shock. We struggled. We were desperate. And desperate people do dangerous things.” That part of the commentary showed that Boushh’s famous armor was a mark of shame, even before he lost it to Princess Leah, because an Ubese off of Uba IV almost automatically signaled that the wearer had been exiled.

The “dangerous things” that Boushh mentioned led into the rest of the issue. Boushh and his crew took a job from Crimson Dawn that involved killing a Domina Tagge and the board members executive board of the familial Tagge Corporation. The whole thing turned out be a traitorous, inside job, and Domina ended up coopting Boushh’s gang to work for her instead. She offered them more money to flip sides on their previous employer, but that wasn’t the most attractive part of her offer. Domina indicated that the Tagge Corporation maintained a relationship with the Ubese, and that if they worked for her, she would find a way to get them home to Uba IV. How and if that can really happen is questionable, but it certainly was an intriguing enough offer that Boushh accepted without hesitation.
