Star Wars boss breaks silence on Luke Skywalker return for Episode X

Star Wars fans received some surprising news this time last week: Daisy Ridley is back as Rey Skywalker, and she’s going to star in a new movie set a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. Ridley’s movie is one of three films announced at the Star Wars Celebration earlier this month. And while details are scarce, Ridley’s follow-up as Rey Skywalker is rumoured to be the next step in the mainline Star Wars movies – Episode X – but there are a lot of questions up in the air. The biggest is: Will Luke Skywalker be making a comeback?

Fans will recall Luke Skywalker has appeared in nearly every mainline Star Wars movie. He was last seen in Episode XIII, The Last Jedi, where he was finally laid to rest.

Since then, in Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker, Rey Skywalker took on the surname of the iconic Jedi family, and she’ll go on to continue their legacy in the coming movies, while rebuilding the Jedi Order.

But during Star Wars Celebration, which was held in London this year, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy was quizzed about if Luke Skywalker will be returning to the series. She was surprisingly open about how the almost mythical being would be included in the next step for the Jedi Order – but it may not be the answer fans were hoping for.

Kennedy confessed: “I don’t know if we’ll spend a lot of time in flashbacks or [on] Force ghosts or things like that.”

With that said, Kennedy revealed Luke would certainly be a main part of the ongoing storyline for the Star Wars universe.

“But, certainly, the spirit of what he [Luke Skywalker] represents to her [Rey Skywalker] is going to be significant,” she told IGN.

However exciting this may be for fans of the Skywalker clan, Kennedy was quick to point out it will not be an easy road for Rey in the future.

She said the young Jedi warrior would be heading up the Jedi Order for the first time – but it would be in a drastic state of “disarray”.

Kennedy explained: “Well we’re 15 years out from Rise of Skywalker, so we’re post-war, post-First Order and the Jedi are in disarray. There’s a lot of discussion around: ‘Who are the Jedi? What are they doing? What’s the state of the galaxy?'”

The Star Wars boss added: “She’s attempting to rebuild the Jedi Order, based on the books, based on what she promised Luke, so that’s where we’re going.”

Rey’s return is surely going to be full of twists, turns and surprises. But no one is more excited about this comeback than Ridley.

When her return was announced at London’s ExCel centre, she told the audience: “I am very thrilled to be continuing this journey.”

No one has yet mentioned Mark Hamill and his potential comeback, but he admitted in recent years how surprised he was about he previous return.

Hamill reprised his role as Luke in the final episode of The Mandalorian season 2. In it, he took on the role of a de-aged Luke, fresh from saving the galaxy in Return of the Jedi.

Speaking on The Tonight Show, Hamill confessed: “I had finished playing that part, and I never expected to do it again. I figured if they ever tell stories of Luke in that period, post the originals and pre-sequels, they would get an age-appropriate actor.

“So when [series creator] Jon Favreau and [producer] Dave Filoni told me about what they wanted to do, I was just stunned.”
