Star Wars actor Mark Hamill gives real opinion on the prequel trilogy
After A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back and The Return of the Jedi, there weren’t any new Star Wars films for 16 years. When George Lucas brought the prequel trilogy to the big screen in 1999 he told the story of how Anakin Skywalker became Darth Vader. The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith were criticised for a number of reasons, however, including the aforementioned CGI and the inclusion of characters such as Jar Jar Binks. But Hamill recently praised the films’ creativity.
The Luke Skywalker star was quoted in JW Rinzler’s book Howard Kazanjian: A Producer’s Life where he said: “I was impressed the prequels had their own identity.”
He went on: “They were criticised because they were exposition-heavy and more cerebral and probably, like he said back in 1976, they weren’t as commercial.”
Hamill also pointed the finger at the internet for making fan complaints seem worse than they are.
He said: “It’s a darker story. But in the age of social media, people’s voices are amplified, and I’m shocked at how brutal they can be, not just in the case of Star Wars films, but across the board.”

Hamill has long been a fan of the franchise and even returned to the series to finish out Skywalker’s story in the sequel trilogy, The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker.
Despite Hamill’s comments, the films were somewhat of a failure.
The three films collectively made just over $2.5 billion at the box office over the span of seven years.
When the sequel trilogy came about, the third set of films made almost $5 billion at the box office.
Marcia then took aim at Kathleen Kennedy, who is the President of Lucasfilm.
She said: “I like Kathleen. I always liked her. She was full of beans. She was really smart and really bright – really wonderful woman. And I liked her husband, Frank. I liked them a lot.
“Now that she’s running Lucasfilm and making movies, it seems to me that Kathy Kennedy and JJ Abrams don’t have a clue about Star Wars. They don’t get it.” (Via FlickeringMyth)
She also lashed out at the decisions made in the films’ stories.
Marcia said: “I thought: ‘You don’t get the Jedi story. You don’t get the magic of Star Wars. You’re getting rid of Han Solo?’
“They have Luke disintegrate. They killed Han Solo. They killed Luke Skywalker. And they don’t have Princess Leia anymore. And they’re spitting out movies every year.
“They think it’s important to appeal to a woman’s audience, so now their main character is this female, who’s supposed to have Jedi powers, but we don’t know how she got Jedi powers or who she is. It sucks.”
The Star Wars films are available on Disney Plus now.
