Star ‘ugg boot’ comedian reveals his faux hipster world
Once was a pastor, this comedian is now a big joke trending hard on TikTok and YouTube. But that’s only half the story.
Enticed by free babysitting, (and reasonably-priced real estate) comedian Josh Hawkins moved his family from Sydney to Adelaide in the middle of the pandemic.
“My wife Catherine is from Adelaide, so it was a no-brainer to move closer to family and we really wanted to try and buy a property,” he says.
“Since then, we’ve had another baby girl, so we now have a two-year-old, a three-month-old and a mortgage – we’re such adults.”
They bought a property from an 80-year-old couple who built the place in the 1960s.
“When we won the auction, we got to meet them afterwards and it was a very special moment to hear all the memories they had in the place. I was excited to hear that they had built a room extension for dance parties with their friends and do the twist.
“My wife played a song on their piano before the removalist took it which made the husband cry because it was so special to them. I don’t think this is a normal owner to buyer transition experience, but it was a beautiful one nonetheless.”
Josh loved the dated wallpaper and shaggy carpet vibe of the house, but that’s now gone.
“My wife has better taste than me, so we ripped up the carpet and found floorboards, peeled away the wallpaper, knocked down an interior wall to make the kitchen, dining and living an open space.”
AT HOME WITH COMEDIAN JOSH HAWKINS
Who: Comedian Josh Hawkins, otherwise known as Hi Josh.
Where: I live in the western suburbs of Adelaide in a cute 1960s brick house with something I never thought I’d have … a backyard.
Favourite thing: Our Philips LatteGo is probably the most used item in our house. Sometimes I’ll just walk past it to smell the beans and it makes me happy.
Inspiration: Mine? Practical. My wife’s? I would call it beauty on a budget.
Home is: A deeply satisfying exhale.
JOSH HAWKINS’ FAVOURITE THINGS
Pink Galah Jumper
I’m a big op-shopper, hence my extensive dress-up collection. This is one of my greatest Salvo finds. I get so many comments about it. I really want to create a replica and sell it. If you know how to sew, hit me up.
Record collection
These have sentimental significance. If it wasn’t for these records, I probably wouldn’t have met my wife (long story). It also makes us look like we are so hipster and cool.
Green screen
This little guy means that I can go anywhere in the world in my videos which is so handy.
Trampoline
I feel like a kid on this trampoline. My two-year-old is obsessed with it. I’m pretty sure I love it even more than her. I can’t wait for sleep-outs in it during summer.
Speaker
Music and dancing is a big part of our household. Most days, we will put on music and have a family dance party.
Ugg boots
In Sydney, you wear Uggs around the house. In Adelaide, these are going out shoes.
Dress up cupboard
Before I got married, I had a whole garage to store my hordes of dress ups, then we moved to a tiny apartment in Sydney, so I had to make some very difficult culls. Now we are back in a house where we have storage again.
Work desk
This is where the magic happens. Countless hours writing scripts and editing videos. The cool thing is that I look out into the backyard, so when I’m working, I can see the kids running around.
